T H E C H EM A W A A M E R IC A N LOCAL O ur chapel service was of g reat in terest last S unday evening. T h e o rch estra played “ Love in V enice” by G rey, G eorge Lekanoff sang “ I K now a Lovely G ar- d e n ” by H ard elo t, M arguerite C ham berlin recited “ Jane J o n e s ,” th e choir san g “ T h e Sw eetest V oice” by E vans, M r. T u rn e y played a “ C o n certin o ” in th ree m ovem ents as a double bass solo, and Supt. H all gave a splendid talk to th e stu d e n ts on the principle of sav ing— frugality and care in the h an d lin g of m oney, the m atter of self-denial, etc. It was a talk that was needed bv all of us; it was of so m uch practical value th a t it sho u ld , and we believe did, cause many to con sider th e m atter of ch an g in g th eir ex trav ag an t ways to o thers m ore econom ical. W e hope to print it in ou r n ex t issue. SENIORS’ ANNUAL PARTY T hose who were fo rtu n ate enough to be present at th e A nnual S enior p arty last S aturday n ig h t are to be co n g ratu late d . T h is annual affair is considered the m ost im p o rtan t of the year, and the one given by the C lass of 1920 w as no exception. Indeed, th is party will stand o u t possibly as eclipsing all form er efforts, for it was th o ro u g h ly planned and com plete in every w ay. T h e large gym was a veritable la b y rin th of hearts and cupids and blue b ird s (th e latter th e class sym bol), h u n d red s and h u n d red s of them suspended from overhead th ro u g h o u t th e hall, w ith darts, cupids and p en n an ts on th e walls, all c a rry in g out a unique valentine m otif. T h e d ain tin ess an d artistic beauty of all decorations was strik in g and beautiful. A program was staged in the n atu re of a “ T ake-off” on the reg u lar F rid a y class program and m uch am use m ent was created by the various local hits. In a d d itio n there were choruses and vocal and in stru m en tal solos. T h e refresh m en ts an d table settin g s were par excellence and did full ju stice to th e p lan n in g of theclass and capable execution of Mrs. Brickell and her d o m estic science stu d en ts, who so kindly did th e catering. Indeed, th e en tire evening was one round of pleasant su rp rises an d enjoym ent. T h e p articip an ts will long rem em ber th e 1920 Senior p arty as a great social suc cess, in w hich th e class accredited itself so well and in w hich M rs. A da B. R isser, senior teacher, was the g u id in g hand. ATHLETIC NOTES C hem aw a’s prospects for a scrappy little baseball team th is season are very b rig h t. L ooking over the s tu dent body we see m any who can sta n d up to th e plate and slam the pill and scoop ’em out of the d u st on the diam ond. W ith all th is good w eather we can n o t help but feel th e baseball season slip p in g aro u n d . M onday found a detail of tw o boys, a team and scraper tak in g off the ridges and filling in the low spots on the base ball diam ond. Coach S anders, w ho has th e track men an d cross co u n try men in han d , has been h av in g w ork-outs d aily . T h e m en look fine rig h t now and will u n doubtedly give a good account of them selves in the big race in P o rtlan d . Spearson, R acine, Many hides, Pablo, W ar B onnet, Caleb S m ith, Last S tar, W illiam Ell and P eppion are am ong those snapped and our rep resen tativ es in th e big cross-country race will be taken from th is group. Joe B ettles, w ho has been decorating him self w ith honor in the past seaso n ’s basket ball schedule, can be seen these su n n y days out w arm ing up his arm for the com ing baseball schedule. Joe is a left-side w heeler and has sent m any of ’em back to warm th e bench. R ight now he looks b etter than ever. T h e cro ss-country ru n n e rs are out each day and are practicing earnestly in preparation for the big race to be held in P o rtlan d F eb ru ary 21. All th e big colleges and ath letic clubs on the coast will be rep re sented in th is event and our “ d istan cers” will have to get up and hu stle if they w ould win one of the beautiful cups offered for th e first twelve men to cross the tape. FROM BOMBAY A few days ago S u p t. H all received a letter from F red J. Jackson, an e x -stu d e n t, who at the tim e of w ritin g w as in Bom bay, B ritish In d ia. T h e letter was w ritten on th e 24th of December last, and was as follows: I have arrived a t Bom bay, B ritish In d ia, after a very successful trip across the Pacific ocean, a d is tance of 12,000 m iles. I am now second assistant e n gineer on an A m erican ship, th e “ B a b in d a,” a freight tram p . W e are going to T u rk e y , Ita ly , and F ran ce, and back to New’ Y ork, w hich is a com plete circle around the w orld. I am w ritin g these few lines w ishing you a happy C hristinas and N ew Y ear, and also th e sam e for my stu d en t friends at good old C. I. S. BLACKSMITH NOTES L ast week we p u t out a d an d y little wagon th a t is to be used for h a u lin g trash . T h e yard boys all seem to w ant to drive. Mr. W elch, o u r in stru c to r, represented the b la ck sm ith d ep artm en t at th e W inona Society last F rid a y and gave th a t body a “ send o ff.” G ood-bye stum ps! T h e blacksm ith d ep artm en t has m obilized the stu m p puller and it is ready to elim inate the stum ps from the various cut-off lands at th is in s ti tu tio n . T he blacksm ith boys secure some experience in w orking on autom obile rep airin g and are looking fo r w ard to the tim e w hen th ere will be a regular autom o bile school in a u g u ra ted in th eir departm ent. SENIOR NOTES T he F riday class-period was used for th e election of officers of th e class of 1920— officers for th e last sem ester. Several elections were hotly contested and the spirit was h ig h .
