From ex p erim en ts m ade it was d is covered th a t some fishes have no preference for th e n ig h t tim e b u t sleep equally well d u rin g the day. T hey m ay be observed restin g q u ite m otionless for periods, ap p aren tly in sleep, excep t th a t, having no eyelids, th ey are unable to close th e ir eyes to ex clu d e all influences from w ithout. T h e h are also sleeps w ith its eyes open, for the sim ple reason th a t its eyes are unprovided w ith ey e lids. In stead of these th e re is a th in m em brane w hich w ith certain birds folds like a c u rta in in th e corner of th e eye and, by an in stan tan eo u s action, flies back w hen sig h t is req u ired , leaving th e eve im m ediately and fully open for the exercize of sig h t. Some birds, such as an eagle, also have th is m em brane w hich, w hen at rest, lies in the corner of the eye, folded up like a draw n cu rta in . above q u o tatio n . to try to be a friend and benefactor of all m ankind. T h is m achine has no w ings at all but gets th ere ju st the sam e— and w hat is m ore, stay s th ere. T h a t is, it cannot only fly but it can rem ain statio n ary in the air. T h is is accom plished by m eans of propellers whose blades act as w ings. T h e angle of these blades can be altered by the driv er, and in th is way th e m achine can be m ade to hover in one place. O ne of the m ain dangers of airplanes h ith e rto has been th at they could not su stain them selves unless they w ere going at high speed.
