O ur dairy herd co n tain s cows th at produce fifty pounds of m ilk each day C arpenters have ju st finished cen terin g for the arches in th e new oven at th e bake shop. Mr. Ross will handle th e issuing of vegetables d u r ing Mr. T u rn e r’s absence th is m onth. T here are 181 boys dom iciled in Brewer H all, ac cording to th e d isc ip lin arian ’s last report. C hem aw a is in the m ark et for the services of a co m petent tailor to en ter on d uty Jan u ary 1st n ex t. All vegetables are stored excep t parsnips and carrots. T h ere are four or five tons of carrots already in th e root house. Some depressions around th e boys’ p lay g ro u n d s are being filled up w ith cinders, th u s doing away w ith m ud holes. T h e pig pens under th e h an d lin g of Mr. Joseph Bettles shows careful atten tio n and com fort for the fifty or m ore new arrivals. T he m em bers of th e te ach e rs’ club certainly ap p re ciate th e splendid T h an k sg iv in g dinner served by the detail of girls u n d er th e direction of Mrs. V an d ag rift. T h e work now being used in th e physical cu ltu re classes are d u m b cells and settin g up exercises. Boys from 7:30 to 8:15 a. m. an d girls from 4 to 4:45 p. m H andles are being p u t on th e em pty w hite lead buckets for use in the b u ildings and these heavy stro n g buckets are ju st the th in g to w ithstand hard usage. N ew uniform s for com pany A have been m anufac tured in the school tailor shop u n d er Mr. Joseph Jam es. These uniform s are well made and fit snu g ly . F or a day or so last week it looked as if we m ight have a coal fam ine, but the coal m ine ow ners pushed th ro u g h some cars and th e danger is over for the p re s ent. E quipm ent for th e basketball team s— both sexes— was purchased early in the week. T h e outfits to be used and worn by th e team s th is year will be a credit to Chem aw a. A new system of cleaning the cam pus on the boys’ side is in effect. E ach com pany is given a certain section to keep in good order. T h e system w orks, as evidenced by th e well k ep t cam pus. T h e heavy w ind of a few days since literally covered our cam pus w ith lim bs and branches, req u irin g a couple of team s and a big force of boys to clear it aw ay. At this w ritin g the cam pus has its usual cleanly appearance. T h e Sophom ores organized into the house of re p re sentatives for the State of C hem aw a last week and a bill prohibiting any citizen of Chem aw a going to the store oftener th an twice a week was introduced, re ferred to a com m ittee and read the second tim e, d e bated— vigorously— again read, voted upon and passed. T he class reorganized as the Senate of the S tate of Chem aw a, w ith representatives from three d istric ts— M cBride, Brew er and M itchell H alls. A gain the bill w ent th ro u g h th e ro u tin e process and was passed. T his was all Civics and the class is hoping the President w o n ’t sign it. O u r m andolin and g u itar club dispensed sweet m usic d u rin g the s tu d e n ts’ T h an k sg iv in g din n er. T h e stu d e n ts showed th eir appreciation by a b urst of a p plause th ro u g h o u t the meal. Dr. Jacob Breid, we u n d erstan d w ith regret, has resigned from our Service on account of ill health. C hem aw a will lose a good friend and the Service a faith fu l and concientious w orker. Dr. O. S. P hilips, eye specialist, is doing fine work here q u ietly and effectively. T he doctor has only re cently retu rn ed from overseas, having served in the m edical corps of o u r arm y in F ran ce. Mrs. A rm stro n g , of Idaho, sister of Miss Skipton w ho has been v isiting here for some weeks, left yes terd ay for her hom e. She has m ade m any friends at C hem aw a. Miss S kipton accom panied her as far as P o rtlan d . T w en ty five of our boys w orked for a ran ch er seven miles east of th e school on S atu rd ay , sorting and to p p ing onions, earning over $4.00 per boy. T he rancher cam e for them in autom obiles and retu rn ed them . Also gave them a big ranch dinner. E stim ates for m aterial and labor for the purpose of co n stru c tin g the new office or adm in istratio n building are being prepared by M r. B radley, su p erin ten d en t of co n stru ctio n , and work will com m ence soon. It will be a concrete building modelled on the Mission style. B etter success in every d ep a rtm en t of our power and steam heating system is had th is year than for the past four years. E very b u ild in g it seem s is well healed and no stoves are in use. T h e cold w eather of the past week did not interfere w ith th e heat, but it did low er th e coal pile. M r. F orce is to b ec o n g ra tu la ted . T wto of our very best horses becam e q u ite sick on M onday an d it was th o u g h t for a w hile we would lose them but th a n k s to prom pt action on th e part of M r. T u rn e r and M r. Ross, together w ith th e help of a v et erin ary surgeon, they are im proving. T he boys of the g ard en detail were very m uch exercised over the m a t ter as th is team was th eir favorite one. T hose stu d e n ts of the choir and o th ers who took part in the T h an k sg iv in g exercises held in th e a u d i to riu m deserve especial m ention for they did sp len d id ly on so sh o rt a notice. Mrs. R isser and Mrs. T u r ney handled this program as a last m om ent affair and presented a most creditable en tertain m en t. T he little g irls w’ho gave the “ P ie ” song w hich was so wTell re n dered are Julia K eeler. F ran ces N icholas, A lexandria G regoriff, Jennie Allen, M arceline F arlow and A nita C hapm an. It is learned from several sources th a t M r. O. H . L ipps, C hief S upervisor of In d ian Schools, will give up th e d u tie s of his present office and accept the po sition of S u p erin ten d en t of the F o rt Lapwai Indian A gency and S an ita iiu m . T h is change was made upon the request of Mr. L ipos, who desires to be w’ith his fam ily. Chem aw a will greatly m iss M r. L ip p s’ co n stru ctiv e visits, for he sensed conditions and needs alm ost m om entarily and alw ays p u t fo rth efforts to as sist the w ork. H e is a high-class, big-hearted g en tle m an and a trained school as well as a business m an.
