OREGON CITY A M E R IC A N L E G IO N C hem aw a’s football w arriors closed th eir schedule on T h an k sg iv in g Day at O regon City w here they beat the undefeated A m erican Legion of th a t place by a score of 7 to 0. A large and en th u siastic crow d atten d ed the con test. T h e score itself indicates a close and hard- fought gam e. A fter a series of forw ard passes and end ru n s our team carried the ball over th e A m erican L eg io n ’s line early in the th ird q u a rte r and kicked goal— for the only score in the gam e. Several ex-C hem aw a stu d e n ts now residing and w orking in P ortland and O regon C ity w itnessed the gam e and cheered our boys on to victory. Russell Adams, g rad u ate, and former C hem aw a football star, um pired th e gam e. Coaches S anders and H au ser, and M anager G eorge Bent accom pained th e team on th e trip . Irv in g S h ep ard also w ent along as usual and acted in the capacity of head linesm an at th e gam e. Yell leader B arrett who rem ained here to assist in th e pit at the services in the auditorium arrived in tim e to see th e last half of the gam e. A T H L E T IC NO TES Basketball practice for the g irls is now well under w ay. Several of last y e a r’s varsity m em bers have re ported for practice and a num ber of others give prom ise to m ake strong contenders for places on th e team if they w ork to gain th eir position again th is year. F irs t call for th e varsity basketball tossers has been issued. Several of the letter men of last y e a r’s team will rep o rt to practice. Reggie Downie has retu rn ed and will act in the capacity of assistan t coach in all b ran ches of ath letics. N ix, a gu ard , will be found a t his old sta n d . O ur outlook for a w inner is good. T h e second call for basketball will be issued T h u rs day w hen those w ishing to join the basketball league to be organized will register. LOCAL Brewer H all, one of C hem aw a’s oldest buildings, is being d o lled -u p w ith a new coat of brow n and w hite by M r. S anders and his painters. M r. M udge has ju s t com pleted the shoe brush and polish case at th e stand of Brewer H all. It is a handy and was very m uch-needed fixture. H as anyone noticed our shoes shining? M r. C harles E . L arson, wife and child, are here from T acom a, W ash in g to n , as guests of Mr. and Mrs. T u rn e y . M r. L arsen is an old ex -stu d en t and em ploye of C hem aw a, and is en ro u te to the Siletz A gency to act as chief clerk. T h e E x celsio r L iterary Society and th e N onpareil L iterary Society held a joint m eeting on N ovem ber 28th, 1919. T h e special num ber on th e program was a debate, “ R esolved, T h a t M ilitary T ra in in g S hould be U n iv e rsa l.” T h e negative won by tw o points. M essrs. S tew art, C arrow , and forces have annexed to the rear of Brew er H all a first-class concrete drain. W e now say good-bye to the w ater th a t used to accum ulate at the back of these q u arte rs and ru n dow n the side to slop up our walks and grounds. T h a n k s to these gentlem en. Louise S ilv erth o rn e was leader of th e Y .W .C .A . m eeting held on S un d ay , using the to p ic “ G irls ’ sense of H o n o r.” A fter each m em ber responded to th e roll call w ith Bible verses, different m em bers gave brief ta lk s on the topic. T h e m eeting was closed w ith the song, “ Blest Be th e T ie T h a t B in d s,” and the w atch word . T h e girls of M cBride Hall reg ret to lose M rs. Cox as th eir house m other. She has been tem porarily em ployed here for over a year and d u rin g th at tim e has endeared herself to all. She is a good m atron and not only m ain tain s sensible discipline but m akes M cBride H ail a real hom e to the one h u n d red g irls w ho have q u arters th erein . It is a real loss to Chem aw a. M r. Joseph E . Jam es, our estim able and efficient tailor, has h anded in his resig n atio n to take effect Decem ber 31st. All Chem aw a reg rets th at the Jam es’ are to leave, for they certainly are a com fortable and nice fam ily to have w ithin our em ploye circle. H ow ever. Mr. Jam es is offered m ore than double th e salary he receives here and feels th a t he should accept. T h e chapel services last Sunday evening were most pleasing in every w av. T he o rchestra played mezzo R u sse” by F ra n k e , M arina N elson sang “ T h e S u n sh in e of Y our S m ile” by Ray, V irg in ia B rickell gave a reading entitled “ H ow W e W oke I k e ,” the choir sang “ Tell It O u t” bv M cPhail, and S u p t. H all concluded th e exercises of th e evening w ith an u n usually fine ta lk . H is them e for discussion was a m ost tim ely one here at the school and was of live in terest.
