Joe B ettles and his dairy force slau g h tered seven o f o u r hogs yesterday in order to provide fresh pork for th e s tu d e n ts ’ T h an k sg iv in g d in n er. T u rk ey is c o n sidered a little too expensive this year. R eports say th a t Ju lia G rom off was one of two p u pils to m ake 100 percent in a recent spelling test and th a t G eorge Lekanoff received 100 percent in book keeping ex am in atio n at Salem H ig h . T h e wTork on the new7 bake oven is p ro g ressin g rap id ly . An u p -to date, high-class oven is being co n stru cted . M r. C hapm an is doctoring the old oven to last from day to day until the new7 one is com pleted. F ra n k P. C orbett, b ro th er of Josephine C orbett, spent th e w eek-end at C hem aw a. M r. C orbett is ta k ing a course at th e W ash ing to n S tate college. H e Ire- longs to the college band as well as being a m em ber of th e football squad. T h e basket social for the sm aller stu d e n ts was held la st n ig h t. • T h e sm aller boys have been w’o rk in g for a nearby ran ch er, p u llin g and sacking carro ts at ten cents a sack d u rin g th eir ow n tim e lately, in order to raise m oney to p u rch ase th e g ir ls ’ baskets and add to th e C hristm as fu n d . W hile unloading sy ru p at the Chem aw a station yes te rd a y , th e train men let a 50-gallon barrel drop from the car, sm ashing in th e head and the molasses filled th e e n tire w alk for yards each way directly in front of the station- It was a sticky mass and im peded traffic for some tim e. W e have heard recently from m any of our old-tim e stu d e n ts and they all seem to be g e ttin g along sp le n didly. T he loyalty w hich they voice for th eir school is m ost g ratify in g to all cf us, from S upt. H all dow n. T h e last ex -stu d e n t from whom w e’ve heard is Jam es E v an s, w ho reports all well w ith him . H e is now postm aster at M etlakatla, A laska. A bout tw enty old friends of M r. and M rs. R u thyn T u rn e y su rp rised this estim able new ly m arried couple by callin g on them at th eir new hom e in a body last F rid a y evening, and to felicitate them on th eir happy m arriage. A com bination electrical cooking stove was presented as a m ark of the high esteem in w hich they are held. R efreshm ents were taken along and a d e lig h tfu l evening spent. C hem aw a was considerably interested in the foot ball gam e betw een W ashington S tate College and O re gon A g ricu ltu ral College w hich took place in P ortland last S atu rday, on account of Mr. G us W elch being th e coach for the W ashington team . T hose w ho w itnessed the gam e claim ed that W ashington outplayed O. A. C. in every way d ep artm en t of the gam e except kicking, b u t the resu lt show ed th a t the stro n g er team was d e feated. Chapel service or Sunday evening exercises are usually so in terestin g th a t nearly all C hem aw a atten d s. On last S unday night the school o rchestra played “ S e ñ o rita ,” a M exican style of com position; C harles W illiam s, w ho was in fine voice, sang “ T h e H ea rt of a R o se;” the choir as a T h an k sg iv in g offering sang “ P raise Ye the F a th e r.” M r T u rn e y , upon request, ren d ered a viola solo, “ Im itation of the B a g p ip e,” w hich was so greatly apprecited th a t he responded to an encore. T hese num bers in addition to the sp irited sin g in g by the stu d en t body filled out a season of e n te rta in m e n t.
