A fter a sh o rt business session a very com plete program was rendered. N onpareil T h e N onpareil Society m et on N ovem ber 21st in room 7. A fter a short business session, a program consisting of songs, recitatio n s, im prom ptu speeches and m usic w as given. T h e debate for the evening was “ R esolved, T h a t A eroplanes are m ore useful th a n au to m o b iles,” th e affirm ative being rep resen ted by Effie Davis and Louise Dem acon and th e negative side of the question upheld by K ath erin e L o ftu s an d Mary W are. V isitors for the evening w ere Miss Scholder and Mr. Sanders. W in o n a T he W inona society had a brief program on F rid a y evening in the gy m n asiu m . M ost of th e tim e was devoted to p rep aratio n for th e an n u al party w hich was to be given the follow ing evening. V elth a F razier, ’19, cam e from P o rtlan d for the W i nona p arty . Josephine C orbett en tertain ed her b ro th er from W ash in g to n S tate College over th e w eek-end and made him a guest at the W inona p arty . Louise S ilverthorne presented the senior room w ith a pretty blue and w hite 1920 calender all are read y for th e new year. T he debate was the feature of the F rid ay class m eeting. Both sides presented good arg u m en ts and th e reb u tta ls w ere spirited. I n a th ree-m in u te speech in the oral com position class, F re d W ild er gave an excellent discussion of T arzan of the A p e s.” W hen he finished th e tim ekeeper found T h e girls of th e W inona L iterary Society e n te r tained in th e gym nasium last S a tu rd a y evening and the host of invited g u ests certainly felt them selves fo rtu n ate to be in atten d an ce. T h e large room was beau tifully decorated w ith cherry blossom effect. T h ere w ere stream ers in th e society colors and p e n n an ts— in fact, everything was in perfect taste. T h e opening feature cf the evening was w hat m ight have been called “ G irls’ Day at C hem aw a.” It proved a clever bit of dialogue and song hits in w hich various people w ere given “ special m ention and in w hich th e en tire society p articip ated . It was m ost o riginal and pleasing. A fter this followed a period of m usic, conversation an d gam es rook and a special guessing gam e pred o m in atin g . At a suitable hour m ost te m p t ing refreshm ents were served. Mrs. Risser is the critic of th is society and her su g g estions and assistance in various w ays prove of great value on an occasion of this k in d . All of th e m any invited guests voice th a n k s to the \ \ inonas and th e ir advisor for a m ost delightful evening of e n tertain m en t. LOCAL M rs. V an d ag rift spent last w eek-end in P ortland v isitin g relatives and friends. O ur Salem high school students as well as gram m ar school pupils are ta k in g a vacation this week on ac co u n t of th e te ach e rs’ in stitu te being held in Salem . W h at does this mean? T he follow ing was clipped from the Spokane Review of N ovem ber 23: Che-m a- w a council N o. 37, D egree of P ocahontas, at its m eeting at Red M en’s hall, W 305 R iverside avenue, T u esd ay n ig h t, N ovem ber 25, will act on several a p plications for m em bership. N om inations of officers for th e com ing term will be m ade. Professor Della C row der-M iller, head of th e d ra m a tic art dep artm en t at W illam ette College, is g iving a series of R iley plays of her own com position th is week. V irg inia B rickell, of Chem aw a, little d au g h ter of M rs. B rickell, one of Mrs. M iller’s pupils, is ta k in g p art in th e play. T h e first program of the series took place last evening and was attended by several of our school people.
