uates and teachers after th e class play on T h u rsd a y
evening.

T w o large side-boards are being m an u factu red in th e
shop, one for th e dom estic science and th e o th er for
the te ach e rs’ club.

T h e classroom display in th e th ird grad e room ,
Miss F lin t teach er, was sp len d id . It reflected credit
on teacher an d p u p ils alike.
On th e m o rn in g after g rad u atio n the g rad u ates,
accom panied by M r. Devol and M rs. Risser, had a
delig h tfu l picnic in th e woods.
Miss S arah Brew er is very busy since com m ence­
m ent ro u tin g p u p ils who are re tu rn in g to th e ir hom es.
She is very p ain s-tak in g , accurate, and alw ays p a ­
tie n t.
T h e first division of em ployes to tak e th e ir an n u al
leave will sta rt on th e 15th. O u r people have w orked
faith fu lly , loyally and unselfishly and have earned
a rest.
T h e follow ing officers of th e Y. M. C. A . leave
tom orrow for th e an n u al conference at Seabeck: Paul

ard , Elw ood T o w n er and Irv in g Shepard.
T h e S o u th ern Pacific statio n at C hem aw a is a very
popular place these days, as every tra in — n o rth or
sou th b o u n d —carries aw ay som e of our stu d e n ts.
T h ere is alw ays a g ro u p of friends th ere to say good-
bv.
S upervisor and M rs. H orace G . W ilson and two
d au g h ters stopped over a t C hem aw a one d ay d u rin g
com m encem ent. T h ey were m o to rin g from R ose­
b u rg to Cam p Lew is to visit a son who is encam ped
there.
Mr. Roy H . B radley, S u p erin ten d en t of C o n stru c­
tion, has taken a fu rn ish ed house in Salem w here he
and his fam ily are now ensconced. M rs. B radley and
tw o ch ild ren arrived M onday evening. T h ey paid
C hem aw a a visit today.

E lw ood T ow ner will finish his high school course
in F eb ru ary n ex t.
M r. T u rn ey has purchased a Ford to u rin g car and
drives it like a veteran.
S traw berries are now ripe. C om pany D, o u r little
girls, started in to pick straw berries today and filled
a good m any d ish p an s w ith the delicious berries and
to say th a t the stu d e n t body enjoyed the berries for
d in n er and supper expresses it m ildly.
On F rid ay afternoon th e class of 1 9 1 9 , w ith M iss
W hite, picnicked in th e woods. T h is class m ade a
resolution d u rin g the picnic to rem ain together as a
class and g rad u ate, an d if they do C hem aw a will have
a class full of pep and go for 1 9 1 9 .
Crops of all kinds need rain badly. W e have had
no rain of an y consequence since last M arch and u n ­
less Ju p ite r P lu v iu s favors us p retty soon th e hay and
grain will am o u n t to but little in th is valley. T h e
berries and garden tru c k are already cut very sh o rt.
T h e teachers, Miss F lin t, Miss R oberts and M iss
W ootton, decorated th e stage for each occasion d u rin g
com m encem ent. T h e taste displayed and a rtistic
to u ch es given rendered th e effect m ost pleasing and
b eau tifu l. T h e w riter takes occasion to com plim ent
these ladies, for th e beautiful appearance of the stage
had m uch to do w ith th e im pression given at each e n ­
tertain m ent.
M r. Devol, principal, gave a d in n er party at th e club
on S u n d ay previous to com m encem ent. C overs w ere
laid for fifteen in clu d in g th e class, S u p erin ten d e n t
and M rs. H all, M rs. R isser, Miss W h ite and M r. D e­
vol. T h e table decorations w ere a rtistic and b e a u ti­
ful, consisting of red and w hite roses, C hem aw a
colors, w ith a tou ch of black, c a rry in g out th e class
colors. T h e place cards was a w ork of a rt.

T h e m agnificent flag now ad o rn in g the au d ito riu m
was made u n d e r the supervision of Mrs. A lb erta F u l­
kerson, w ho was faith fu lly assisted by E s th e r Jack-
son, F red a L iljegren, C h ristin e F orsm an, H e n rie tta
C ham berlin, Sadie K now les, Lillie P alm er, C lara
M orais, Ju lia G rom oft, Effie Davis and A gnes S tew art.
T h is flag represents a g reat deal of in tric a te hand
needle w ork and all Chem aw a appreciates th e in te re st
m anifested bv M rs. F u lk erso n and these g irls. I t w as
m ade at a very busy tim e, ju st previous to com m ence­
m ent, w hen m uch e x tra w ork was being crow ded in.
In order to com plete the flag they w illingly w orked
overtim e each day and w eie very proud to do so.
