SUCCESS IS N O A C C ID E N T
It is won only through striving. No man or woman ever
accomplishes anything without laboring for it. People do
not stumble into positions of importance and consequence; these
are attained only through constant effort and persistent striv­
ing.
THE GRADUATING CLASS
The day of graduation for thé class of ’18 is draw ­
ing near. Soon the; members of the class will have
received their diplomas and will hâve passed from the
school and from our midst. This will occur before
the next issue of the American, for we expect to get
out but one more number, of the school paper this
year, and it will be after all commencement events
have become history.
As we understand the situation, there are many
things planned by the various graduates. Some in­
tend, no doubt, to continue their studies at institu­
tions of higher learning, while others will buckle
down at once to the work of mén and woman—ma­
terial work, where what they have learned at Ghe-
mawa fof both head and hands will prove of inestim­
able value to them. Let those who elect to carry
their studies further do so in all seriousness, endeavor­
ing to acquire knowledge which will be of service
and value to themselves and their fellows. We
admonish those whose path will lead them at once to
labor for the production and acquirement of material
things to give honest thought and toil in whatever
is undertaken wherever it may be. In this wav only
can you gain the respect and confidence of others-
and hold it in yourselves. Be not afraid of honest
tdil, for it is better to wear out than rust out. By
taking good care of yourselves, eating and sleeping
properly, you will be a long time wearing out. It
is lack of rest, gluttony, and‘various othei forms of
dissipation which destroys and kills.
Let each member of the class, for hisand her own
sake, so live that the people of your community will
have confidence in you and respect for you. Do
not exalt yourselves above your fellows, but on the
other hand do not so conduct yourselves that you are
inclined to debase yourselves beyond the poiht of mod­
est humility. Strict honesty and seriousness of pur­
pose will hold you right where you belong—neither
too high nor too low.

There are six members in this year’s graduating
class—five girls' and one boy. Many of these young
people have'lived here for years and we have become
accustomed to looking upon theni as fixed members
of our large family; They have endeared themselves
to us in many ways and when they are gone we shall
miss them. We have faith in them and hope for them.
You will always find trouble and obstacles confront­
ing yon, but bear in mind that he who overcomes the
greatest obstacles is the greatest man—or woman. To
the class: The American’s best wishes! |
REPORTER’S NOTES

The Brewer Hall boys are proud of the fact that
they are to be given the Junior Red Cross banner.
The Alumni have a strong team this season and are
looking forward to a good game with the ’varsity team.
Mr. Henderson returned from a week’s vacation
and reports that he had a good time and is ready for
work in the store again.
Roses are blooming,all over the campus and it is
certain we will have plenty for commencement if they
are properly conserved. Do yqur bit!
On Wednesday last the Chemawa baseball squad
defeated the Salem .High team by a score of 5—0.
This is the second game with the high school boys,
but they are unable to score' on our team.
John Pablo recently wrote a letter to the class of ’19
and sent a souvenir from France. The class appreci­
ates the token and are having it enclosed in a glass
case. The class o f ’19 keeps in touch .with many of
our boys who have gone “ over there.”
The Brewer Hall baseball team is preparing for the
game with the strong Mitchell Hall team to be played
during commencement week. They have lost two of
their players who have changed lodging places and
who will play with the Mitchell Hall team.
On Decoration Day Chemawa will play their last
game of the season with the Willamette University on
our home grounds. Willamette is trying hard to de­
feat our boys, but so far has been unable to do so?
Our boys are still in good condition andiintend to give
them a good cleaning.
