On the ev ening of the 25th the E xcelsiors held a very
sp irited m eeting. It was full of “ p ep ” and vim from
beg inning to end.
M r. G alb raith , who has charge of th e piggery, is
g ettin g th e lots in fine condition. T h ere are fifty-
eigh t young pigs now.
Isaac Jones has gone to w ar service and E dw ard
A uld will soon go. T h e seventh grade has lost a
num ber of boys to the call of th e colors.

On W ednesday, M arch 27th, Miss Lem ley took th e
Ju n io r girls of th e D om estic Science class for a ra m ­
ble in th e woods. T h ey retu rn ed w ith a num ber of
E aster lilies an d h ad a jolly good tim e.
P aul L ip h a rt w as elected president of th e Y. M. C.
A. for the year of ’1 8 an d ’19, succeeding Irv in g S h ep ­
ard, the re tirin g p resid en t. T h e Y. M. C. A. was
very successful u n d er the leadership of Irv in g .
Paul L ip h art was elected president of the M itchell
Club to fill the vacancy caused bv th e en listm en t of
Russell A dam s in th e N avy. H e took office last
F rid ay evening and th e m em bers expect g reat th in g s
of him .
In early F e b ru a ry Louise DeM acon placed som e
beans in betw een a roll of m oist cotton and th e sides
of a glass so we could see how the beans spro u ted and
note how long th e little p lan ts w ould co n tin u e to
grow w ith o u t any soil. One sm all p lan t has six
leaves and m ore than th a t—is now in blossom .

last w eek.

w hile at w ork in the patch and we are ru sh in g to
finish up th e job.
A FROG’S SPEECH
I was n o th in g once, b u t after aw hile my folks told
me how I cam e to be a frog. A nd I th o u g h t to
m yself, I will w rite a little story about how I cam e
to be a frog. M any years ago I was a little egg in a
b u n ch of eggs, floating in the w ater of a pond. I
was the biggest egg in th e fam ily, I was th e first one
hatch ed, and I found m yself in the coolest place in
the m uddy w ater. A fter aw hile my legs and m y tail
grew o ut. Day by day I grew a little bit bigger.
On my w ay grow ing I had a good tim e w ith m y
b ro th ers and sisteis. W e sang am ong th e ponds
n ig h t and d ay . Som etim es we saw w ild beasts com ­
ing and we all jum ped deep into the w ater and dow n
in to the m ud. T h a t’s how we got out of d an g er.
A fter aw hile I grew older ahd older. O nce in
aw hile I cam e out of the w ater and sat on a log
w atch ing for some danger. In the evenings I w ent
back to the w ater and told stories to the y o u n g sters
th a t were grow ing. I told them how we all grew
older and older and how our tails com e off and we
change from tadpoles to frogs.
O ne sp rin g w hen the sun was sh in in g over the
valleys we were all out of the w ater sin g in g like the
Chem aw a band and all at once we stopped sin g in g
for wTe heard a couple of voices cry in g aw ay u p in
the air. I looked u p and w hat do you th in k I saw?
T h ere was a big bird flying over us carry in g some
frogs to his hom e.
O ne day I held a m eeting. I called all the frogs
to g eth er and I gave them a little speech. I told
them how to keep out of dan g er. I told them I w as
going be. th e head of all. A fter th a t there w as no
d an g er and there was no trouble going on. T h e n , all
the frogs called me th e “ F ro g s ’ S p e a k e r.”
T h ere was once a tim e w hen a great m any of them
got m um ps and nearly all th e frogs had them , b u t I
d id n ’t so they called me to be th e doctor. I told
them how to get rid of the m um ps and th ey were all
rig h t again. T h en I was called “ D octor F r o g .” —
