S E A S ID E T uesday evening C hem aw a opened its basketball season by defeating th e stro n g Seaside team from A storia. Ju d g in g from th e crow d and the ro o tin g in the gym , the en tire stu d e n t body and faculty m ust have w itnessed the contest. H ow ever, th ey w ere well repaid for th e ir loyalty for th eir team “ b ro u g h t hom e th e b aco n ” after a h ard -fo u g h t gam e, by a score of 25 to 20. Both th e Seaside players and Coach M atthew s of W illam ette U n iv ersity , w ho refereed th e gam e, com pli m ented our boys on th e good team -w ork and clean playing of the team . R eginald D ow nie, forw ard, w ent out of the gam e early in th e second half on account of in ju ry and was replaced by his b ro th er Bob. In ten se in terest and en th u siasm prevailed th ro u g h out th e e n tire gam e, as each point was g ain ed only after good, h ard w ork. H ard ly a team com es to C hem aw a w hich does not m ake som e favorable com m ent about its w ell-kept cam pus and th e ex cellent co n d itio n of th e q u arters w hich they v isit. T h is team w as no exception. T h ey praised th e b o y s’ q u arte rs and th e delicious m eals pre pared at th e dom estic science by the girls for them . W e not only won th e basketball gam e from them , but th e ir respect and frien d sh ip , too. T h a t’s w hat counts. E ast week the n in th g rad e class m ade a special stu d y of lig h t. T h is was an u n u su ally in terestin g ch ap ter in th e physics book. W ade C raw ford, an e x -stu d e n t, was recently m ar ried at h is hom e in K lam ath F alls, O regon. W e w ish him th e very best of success in his new life. •T he afternoon chapel services before en terin g the class rooms prove to be very helpful and in terestin g . E ach day one of teachers and a few stu d e n ts tak e ch arg e of th e m eeting. H en ry D arnell, w ho recently joined the colors, was one of C hem aw a’s loyal rooters at the gam e in P o rt land last W ednesday n ig h t. H e states th a t he will pay “ dear old C hem aw a” a visit before he is tran sferred to some other cam p from V ancouver. On S atu rd ay our v arsity basketball team will play th e stro n g M t. A ngel team at M t. A ngel. A good hard and fast gam e is an ticip ated . R eginald D ow nie who was in ju red in th e first gam e of th e season has fully recovered from his in ju ry and will appear in th e gam e S atu rd ay . On W ednesday last our basketball team w as defeated by th e S outh P arkw ay team by a score of 29—10. T h e defeat is not nearly as bad as th e score indicates, as o u r team was handicapped by th e conditions of th e ir gym . T h e o th er half of th e sto ry will be show n w hen th e same team appears on our floor th e 2d of F eb ru ary . T h is afternoon our Ju n io r basketball team will play th e stro n g M t. A ngel Ju n io r team at M t. A ngel. T he M t. A ngel Ju n io r team has not been beaten in the last four years. E ast year they beat the Chem aw a Ju n io rs by a large score, b u t o u r team is going back w ith g reat enthusiasm and expects to retu rn th e com p lim ents of last season. Y . M. C.
