M rs. A rm stro n g , of Id ah o , arrived on T u esd ay to
visit her sister, M iss S k i^ to n .
M r. Brace, p ro p erty clerk, was in Mill C ity on
school business a few d ay s th is w eek.
A half-dozen of o u r boys enlisted d u rin g th e past
ten days, some in the arm y and others in the navy.
Miss C allista R einville, class ‘13, is now em ployed
at the U m atilla In d ia n School as small b o y s’ m atron.
T h e anthem by the choir on S unday evening was
particu larly pleasing. M iss Brew er is grad u ally im ­
proving th e q u ality of th e sin g in g .
I t is rum ored aro u n d th e cam pus th a t M r. S tew art,
th e school plum ber, has arran g ed to en ter th e arm y as
one of th e p lu m b in g brigade. H e is a good plum ber
and a w illing w orker.
T h e football b an q u et will be given tom orrow n ig h t.
R eggie Downie will act as toastm aster, and also be
th e principal speaker on th a t occasion. M uch reg ret
is expressed th a t Coach W . J. W arn er cannot be p res­
en t.
M r. Ross, cam pus g ard en er, secured 500 rose slips
and an equal n u m b er of g eran iu m s from th e S tate
H ouse g ard en er on T u esd ay . H e also arran g ed for
300 tw o-year-old rose bushes, all to be used in b e a u ti­
fying o u r Chem aw a g ro u n d s.
M r. Jo h n A . Blessing, w ho needs no in tro d u ctio n to
C hem aw a folks, arriv ed y esterd ay and took charge of
th e eng in eerin g d ep artm en ts. H e was chief en g ineer
for some m onths last w in ter and Chem aw a w elcom es
him back again on th e difficult job.
A large delegation of g irls atten d ed the b asketball
practice on T u esd ay evening. T h ere are a dozen
candidates for every position. Coach Downie has his
h an d s full, b u t is e n th u siastic over the prospects for a
fast team to play ag a in st th e colleges and high schools.
A rran g em en ts have ju s t been com pleted by M r.
Devol, principal, w hereby th e senior class will occupy
th e class-room on th e first floor of the academ ic b u ild ­
ing. T h e p ain ters have been busy p ain tin g and o th e r­
wise fresh en in g u p th e room in order to ren d er it m ore
cheerful.
T h e m onthly social for th e em ployes held on T h u rs ­
day evening last in th e gym nasium was a u n ique and
pleasant occasion. T h e ‘‘H o o v er” refreshm ents w ere
especially enjoyed and show s w hat a really good tim e
can be had for a “ jitn e y .” M r. Loos, Miss M itchell
and M iss L em ley was th e com m ittee in ch arg e of th e
»vcial life at C hem aw a for Decem ber.

th is year. Ivan A nderson led th e last m eeting, the
topic being: “ A Y oung M an and H is C h u rc h .”
M any m em bers responded w ith good brief rem arks,
te llin g how th e church could help the young m an and
how th e y o ung m an could help th e ch u rch .
F ra n k P eratrovich and C lyde F ields rendered a very
good cornet and saxophone d u et, w hich added to the
liveliness of th e m eeting. F ra n k also aids m aterially
in th e song service w ith his cornet.
A t the close of the m eeting M r. Hood gave us m any
helpful rem arks on th e topic and the disuse of profane
la n g u ag e.
N ex t S unday Rev. G ill of Salem will address th e Y .
M. and Y. W . m em bers at th e ir regular joint m eeting
on the subject, “ W hy W e are at W a r .” A num ber of
o u r stu d e n ts heard M r. G ill address th e Salem H ig h
School stu d e n t body on the sam e subject and they say
he held every one spellbound th ro u g h his entire talk,
so th e m em bers are looking forw ard to his com ing w ith
m u ch an ticipation and cordially invite all em ployees
an d stu d e n ts to be present to hear him , for it u n d o u b t­
edly will be a rare treat.
