at the gym classes every d ay . T h ey will be given at

Since M r. Loos organized the m andolin club, g u itars,
m andolins an d ukuleles can be heard ab o u t M cBride
H all at all tim es of the day.
T h e stu d e n t body is p ro u d of th e fact th a t several
of th eir n u m b er have already p u t th e ir feet on foreign
soil and a lot m ore will follow .
G eorge B arrett was called to B ellingham , W ash .,
on T h u rsd a y last on account of the d eath of his b rother
P atsy. H e retu rn ed on S atu rd ay .
On T h u rsd ay evening th e H ooverized plan was tried
at the em ployes’ social. T h is proved very successfully.
Sweet cider and pop corn w ere served.
Of late there has been a g reat deal of im provem ent
along th e lines of m arch in g in and o u t of the academ ic
build in g . T h is is due to M r. D evol’s o rg an izatio n .
T h e g irls a t M cBride H all are very g ratefu l to Ivan
A nderson and T om P h illip s for th e good w ork w hich
they did in p u ttin g the iro n in g boards in th e ir la u n d ry .
E dw in G ilbeau, vocational ta ilo r, m ade a 7 1-2-foot
p en n an t for th e te n th g rad e. I t w as splen d id ly made
and it will loom up at all class affairs. T h e class is
proud of it.
B asketball is now in full sw ing a t th e gym . All
boys who are try in g o u t are w o rk in g h ard for a place
on th e team . F rom the w ay th in g s look we will
have a good team .
On M onday evening a big crow d of g irls tu rn ed o u t
to practice for the g irls ’ basketball team . T h ey are
an x io u s to play th e gam e and th ere is no doubt about
h av in g a good g irls ’ team .
On S a tu rd a y last th e m em bers of th e n in th grade
gave a p arty in honor of th e te n th grade at th e academ ic
b u ild in g . T h ere w ere six ty or m ore p resen t and a
good tim e in general w as had.
O n S atu rd ay M r. M itchell left for M ontana, w here
he will stay for a day or so looking after som e land w ith
a view of p u rch asin g . Joe B ettles will ta k e charge of
the dairy d u rin g M r. M itch ell’s absence.
M r. Ross and his force of boys w ere busy last week
sp read in g fertilizer and sp ad in g up all flower beds an d
roses beds, p re p a rin g them for th e fall. C hem aw a
will ab ound w ith roses and o th e r flowers n e x t sp rin g
and sum m er.

S ecretary M cAdoo appeals to th e “ sp irit of ’76” in
a saving cam paign to assist in w in n in g th e w ar. H e
speaks as follow s in connection w ith th e cam paign to
raise $2,000,000,000, ju s t in au g u rated :
“ W e m ust w in th is w ar. W e can and we shall w in
if th e boys and girls of A m erica say so and m ean it
and feel it and live it as the boys and g irls of ’76 lived
an d felt and helped.
“ T h e nation needs th a t sort of boys a n d g irls to d a y ,
no't to beat th eir d ru m s, nor to load our m uskets, b u t
to s ta rt a g reat w ork w hich m u st be done. I t ’s the
p art of boys and g irls today to teach th e grow n people
of th e n ation th e lesson of th rift— saving to th e point of
sacrifice, self-denial of e v e ry th in g unnecessary. If
every boy and g irl says at hom e to n ig h t I will fight
in th is w ar, I will save every penny an d loan it to my
go v ern m ent to help save th e lives of big b ro th ers of
A m erica, I will try to teach every A m erican I see to do
th e sam e, th en th e 20,000,000 hom es, the hom es of all
A m erica, w ill be filled w ith th e sp irit of ‘76.

th ro u g h th e splendid stren g th , courage an d sacrifice

T h e Ju n io rs gave a reception to th e S eniors last F r i­
day ev ening in th e old au d ito riu m of th e academ ic
b u ild in g . T h is is the first class p a rty of th e year and
it was a great success. I t was perfectly planned and
carried out and th e w riter does not rem em ber of ever
atten d in g a m ore enjoyable class p arty . T h e various
stu n ts b ro u g h t forth m uch m errim en t. Yell leaders for
th e tw o sections w ere H en ry E lk and R eggie Downie,
who m aintained a h ealth y rivalry in th e yells and songs.
D electable refreshm ents w ere served.
