D aly, ag ric u ltu rist, has prepared th e ground and drilled in ten acres of w inter w heat; th is is to help feed the school p o u ltry . A splendid talk to th e P ro te sta n ts w as given on S unday afternoon by Dr. J. K . B row n, a retu rn ed m issionary from T u rk e y . M r. and M rs. C harles A. M urphy and M rs. H . L . E am ouroux were visitors on S u n d ay afternoon. M r. M urphy is w arden of th e state p en iten tiary . A new steam m ain will soon be put in leading from th e pow er house to the la u n d ry . Since th e Chem aw a team has rounded o u t and is show ing a q u ality of football h ard to rival, Coach W arn er has h is old-tim e sm ile. All C hem aw a is p roud of its coach. A jo in t m eeting of th e Y . M. C. A . and Y . W . C. A . w as held on S unday evening, at w hich tim e Rev. Jam es E lvin gave a stro n g address on w ar conditions and th e need of assistance by th e associations. M r. M arion L. Devol, Day School In sp ecto r a t th e K iow a A gency Schools, O klahom a, has been tra n s ferred to C hem aw a as P rin cip al. H e will arriv e th is w eek. M r. Devol is no stra n g e r here an d will be m et w ith open arm s by both em ployes and stu d e n ts. T h irty acres in hay has been added to th e school ran ch so for th is year. P robably ten m ore acres will be reclaim ed in th e lake bottom , besides six teen acres across th e slough from the barns. C learing land and p rep arin g it far cu ltivation in th is wooded co u n try is no sm all task . T h e W ednesday inspectors rep o rt th e dairy barn as being im m aculately kept. T h e in terio r has ju st been given a coat of w hitew ash, the stools, pail racks and uniform lockers stand out quite prom inently on ac co u n t of being nicely painted. M r. M itchell and his chief assistant, Joe Bettles, are “ d oing th in g s .” In a gam e of football last S atu rd ay betw een C he m aw a and th e 4th E ngineers, tw o players belonging to the arm y had the m isfortune to be seriously in ju red , one had an arm broken and another his shoulder blade broken. E ig h t sub stitu tes were used by th e engineers, w hile C hem aw a m ade no change th ro u g h o u t the gam e and not a m an was h u rt A large num ber of Silverton H igh School stu d en ts of both sexes accom panied th eir team to Chem aw a last F rid ay afternoon and rig h t loyally cheered for Silver- ton th ro u g h o u t th e gam e w ith our second team , in th e face of a defeat for S ilverton, as was evident from th e sta rt. T h e ir songs w ere clever and rendered w ith “ p e p ” an d enthusiasm . T h e re was m uch good- n atured repartee betw een C hem aw a rooters and S il verton, w hich added spice to th e afternoon. T h e best stu d e n t body rally, or jo lly -u p , of th e year w as held last F rid ay evening in th e aud ito riu m . Speeches w ere m ade by P resid en t R eggie Downie, Irv in g S hepard and M r. H o b u ck et. Y ells and songs w ere given an d a ro u sin g m eeting held generally. T he football team was called upon and in a body m arched upon the stage and surprised th e audience by singing a song. It m ade a big h it and th ey w ere encored and com pelled to respond four tim es. M uch enthusiasm prevailed, as th e team was leaving th e n ex t d ay for th e V ancouver B arracks to play th e 4th E n g in e e rs’ football team . Jack F ro st is g radually creeping upon us. P repare for a cold w inter. T h e g irls of the prevocational sew ing room have doubled th e ir w ork of late. T h ey are ta k in g m uch in terest and hope to be able to accom plish even m ore. L y d a B auer was recently placed in charge of the th ird grade g irls and beginners in th e sew ing room . T h ey are m ending and hem m ing table cloths and do in g good w ork. , A card from R obert N . Service, now of th e A viation Corps, inform s us th a t he is now stationed at F o rt O m aha, N ebraska. “ B u n n ie” was one of C hem aw a’s sta r debaters. W ednesday evening the fire alarm w as given for fire at th e h ospital. T h e firemen rush ed th e hose ca rt to th e place of fire, b u t th e fire w as ex tin g u ish ed before th ey reached th e scene. Be careful about false alarm s.
