Declam ation
T h e closing w eek a t Chem aw a was fra u g h t w ith
splendid program s for each of the four days. On S unday
evening in lieu of a baccalaureate serm on P ro f. Jo h n
W . T o d d , S u p erin ten d e n t of Salem Schools, delivered
an address to th e stu d e n t body in the school a u d ito r­
iu m . H is su b ject was, “ W h at You go to School F o r. ”
H e dealt w ith th e question of th e sch o o l's p art in se­
lectin g and finding a tru e vocation. H is address was
logical and to th e p o in t, and was received w ith m uch
appreciation by th e stu d e n t body an d th e m any visi­
to rs p resen t. Special m usic by the choir and o rch es­
tra w as fu rn ish ed .
BASEBALL
O n M onday afternoon th e an n u al baseball gam e be­
tw een th e C hem aw a team and A lum ni took place,
w ith a big crow d of rooters for both team s on h an d ,
and a lively gam e was h ad . I t was pretty evident from
th e com m encem ent of the gam e th at th e A lum ni team
wras th e stro n g er, for a t the close of th e 9th in n in g
th e score stood 11 to 3 in the A lum ni te a m ’s favor.
Some of th e old-tim ers, like R euben S anders and o th ­
ers of th e “ old b o y s,” p u t up a good q u ality of ball
th a t proved th ey had not forgotten how to play. H owt -
ever, it was a good gam e for th e m any spectators and
a fine afternoon of sp o rt w as had.
DECLAMATION CONTEST
T h e first an n u al declam ation contest, in w’hich there
w ere th irte en com petitors, w as exceptionally good
and m uch su rp rise was created by th e splendid abili­
ty show n by th e stu d e n ts p articip atin g . W ade M in-
th o rn won first prize, a gold w atch, an d H enderson
T atsh am a, second, a fo u n tain pen. M amie F risk was
aw arded honorable m ention. T h e ju d g es of th e con­
te st w ere M rs. A nna R oger F ish , head of th e Salem
School of E x p ressio n , and tw o of her advanced s tu ­
dents, M iss L aV on Coppock and Miss L u lu W alto n .

A t th e conclusion of th e contest Miss W alton and
Miss Coppock each took p art by giving readings w hich
w ere especially good and aroused considerable e n th u ­
siasm .
IN SPEC TIO N
A general inspection of th e classroom s, shops, d o r­
m itories, etc., took place on T uesday m orning. T h e
inspection of q u a rte rs was carried on th e sam e as is
custom ary each S u n d ay m orning w ith all stu d e n ts
stan d in g at th eir beds “ at a tte n tio n .” All of th e vis­
itors and boy stu d e n ts first inspected the g ir ls ’ q u a r­
ters, and one can n o t call atten tio n to any p articu lar
d orm itory, as each was im m aculate in cleanliness,
neatness and order.
T h e g irls in th e ir attractiv e w hite uniform s, sta n d ­
in g by carefully m ade beds, to g eth er w ith th e artistic
appearance of th e room s, m ade a nice sight. Indeed,
Chem aw a girls, as usual, m ade a fine im pression and
gave a splendid touch to th e otherw ise w ell-kept
buildings.
In the m usic room of M cBride H all a large exhibit
of fancy needle w ork was displayed, being th e work of
tw o art classes. T h e large living room , filled w ith
th e new M ission fu rn itu re m ade by th e vocational ca r­
penters, presented a hom e-like and com fortable a p ­
pearance. A ltogether, th e g irls ’ q u arters were a
pleasure to visit.
In all d epartm en ts ex h ib its were in evidence. T h e
dom estic science cooking classes had ex h ib it tables
fairly g ro an in g u n d er loads of all kinds of fancy and
plain cooking, preserves, jam s, etc. In addition th e
g uests were served fru it p unch and sm all cakes. T h e
sew ing room s m ade a fine display of sew ing; th e
lau n d ry no small display of well w ashed, starched and
ironed clo thing, in clu d in g boys’ shirts and collars;
