T h e grass on th e school cam pus is grow ing so rap id ly th a t it is necessary to use th e lawn m owers. C hem aw a’s law ns are green and beautiful th ro u g h o u t th e year. T h e finishing touches are being m ade to the a u d i torium th is week and it is expected to move th e opera seats and place them so th a t services may be held therein on S unday n ex t. T h e school band, u n d er th e able leadership of M r. Loos, has m ade a decided im provem ent. M r. Loos speaks well of th e w ork of th e m em bers of th e band, as well as th e advancem ent of th e ‘ little b a n d ,” w hich also does well. T h e flag cerem ony at C hem aw a never grow s o ld . W ith th e en tire stu d e n t body in line, all uncovered, and the school band p lay in g th e S tar Spangled B an ner, O ld G lory is low ered from th e top of a 90-foot flag pole each evening. W e are pleased to report th a t th e last Sunday m o rn in g inspection of q u arters was quite satisfactory. T h e pup ils are rem inded how ever, not to forget to have the bureau draw ers pulled out so th at th e S u p erin ten d e n t m ay see at a glance th e condition of th e contents. T h e Salem Indian School fared very well at th e h an d s of C ongress this year. T h e In d ian A p p ro p ri ation Bill provides $102,200 for su p p o rt of the school and $50,000 for repairs, im provem ents and new b u ild ings, w hich becomes available on Ju ly 1st n ex t. A m ost faithful and devoted friend of th e little gifls in W inona H all is H elen E stabrook. She takes great interest in giving the 36 small ones atten tio n d u rin g her recreation hours. On S u n d ay m o rn in g inspec tions th e dorm itory w ith the 36 little girls sta n d in g alongside snotless and w hite beds, all at a tten tio n , is ti e work of H e’en, who has trained th e g irls to do th e ir w ork “ ju st r ig h t.” CHEM AW A HONORED P rincess T sian in a, a full blood In d ia n prim a do n n a, and C harles W akefield C adm an, one of A m erica’s m ost d istin ctiv e com posers and pianists, visited C h e m aw a on T h u rsd a y of last week and very graciously e n tertain e d th e em ployes and stu d e n t body in th e school gy m n asiu m . T sia n in a sang “ A t D a w n in g ,” “ In v ocation to T h e Sun G o d ,” “ T h e N aked B e a r,” all in th e C reek language and a “ C anoe S o n g ” w ith ch aracteristic ro w in g gestures, th e com poser play in g th e accom panim ent. M uch appreciation was show n by th e stu d e n ts and th e applause did not cease u n til th is lovely and charm ing In d ian m aiden responded in a ren d itio n of a song of her own com position and a c com panim ent, w hich w as th e “ Crow E g g .” It was a little encore b u t given so ch arm in g ly and w ith such m erry sp irit th a t the audience lau g h ed u n til they cried. T sian in a is an a rtist and in add itio n is a g irl of such u tte r unaffection, and so earn est, and of such u n u su al w in n in g p ersonality, w hich, added to h er loyalty to her race, captivated th e e n tire school. C hem aw a’s stu d e n t body gave a ro u sin g cheer in appreciation of the com plim ent paid th e school. M r. C adm an and T sia n in a accom panied by M rs. E stab rook, M r. and M rs. S m ith and Miss M agers took su p p er w ith th e stu d e n ts in th e m ain d in in g room . A fter su p p er T sian in a joined in w ith th e older g irls and visited w ith them in th e ir room s and elsew here. She rem arked th a t C hem aw a was so different from th e In d ian school she attended th a t she w ould love to go to school hete. M r. C adm an and T sia n in a passed m any com plim ents on Chem aw a; he said th a t he had never visited a school th a t pleased him so m uch. H e was especially surprised in reg ard to the high quality of m usic rendered by C hem aw a’s s trin g q u a rte t, as well as th e “ P e p ” and general atm osphere of th e en tire school. P revious to the delig h tfu l concert given by T sian in a, M r. S m ith gave a gym nastic ex h ib itio n co n sistin g of folk d an cin g , In d ian Clubs, Rifle D rill, C lap D ance, etc., on p art of probably 200 stu d e n ts w ho w ere in th e ir w hite gym su its. T h is was follow ed by several selec tio n s by th e strin g q u arte t u n d er d irection of M r. R u th y n T u rn e y , a com poser of no little rep u te. A fter T sian in ia had com pleted her concert, an d upon M r. C ad m an ’s req u est, th e q u a rte t rend ered th a t rem a rk able com position, “ Second In d ia n S u ite ,” in four m ovem ents, bv Mr. T u rn e y . A t th e conclusion of th is n u m ber M r. Cadm an rem arked th a t th e co m p o si tion was unusual and rendered w ith g reat effect, as it was a difficult piece to play. M r. H am m ond, in the absence of the S u p erin ten d en t, directed th e cerem onies. T sian in a held a reception in th e gym as th e stu d e n ts w ere dism issed. A fterw ards M rs. H all gave a recep tion in her hom e to th e faculty, m usicians, an d some visitors from Salem , in honor of the artists. D ainty refresh m ents w ere served.
