R E C E P T IO N IN M eB R ID E H A L L S U B S C R IP T IO N - - HAPPY NEW 25C ts P E R A N N U M YEAR T h e first part of our school year is over, and as th e past few m onths have been review ed, we find m any th in g s th a t will be pleasant and profitable to rem em ber. W e have a large num ber of pupils and they are the kind w hich m ake good stu d en ts. W e have had m any social affairs and have becom e b etter acquainted w ith each other. O ur ath letics have been reasonable and successful. In our classroom w ork and in o u r in dustrial w ork we have m ade especially cred itab le progress. Now we are ju st b eg in n in g a new year, and a new term , as it were. New d u ties and activities will e n gage our tim e and atten tio n ; and it is only fitting th a t we should take up the w ork of th e New Y ear, 1917, w ith a renew ed in terest, determ ined to get all the good th a t C hem aw a offers. Y ou have heard m any jocular rem arks about m aking and break in g New Year resolutions; b u t, after all, it is a good th in g to m ake good resolutions once in a while, even, u n fo rtu n ately , if they should be broken, for in each trial to keep a resolution we gain stre n g th for the n ex t effort. Let us resolve th a t we will correct th e m istakes we have made in the past few m onths and m ake the last part of the school year even better and h ap p ier than the first. W IN O N A G IR L S E N T E R T A IN * One of the m ost enjoyable affairs of the holiday season was the social given F rid ay n ig h t in the p a r lors of W inona H all T h e guests included all the Brewer Hall boys, as w ill as the officers ot e th e r q u a r ters. T he large assem bly room v as used for d an cin g , B row n’s orchestra fu rn ish in g th e m usic. T he for tune telling booth in cne ccrnc r «afforded much am use m ent and was crow ded all the evening. T he “ G reenw ood C o rn er’’ was a very popular spot, as delicious punch was served th ro u g h o u t the evening. In th e adjoining parlor various gam es were enjoyed, w hile the large front hall was utilized for congenial c h a tte r and conversation. R efreshm ents consisting of sandw iches, coffee and cake w ere served. T h e v e u n g ladies of M cB ride H all gave a re tu rn reception to the y o ung men of M itchell H all and th e officers and older stu d e n ts of W in o n a and Brew er H alls on T h u rsd ay evening. T h e b u ild in g was appropriately decorated w ith greenery and C hristm as trees, w hile in dividual rooms were m ade u n u su ally attractiv e w ith festoons of greenery and crepe paper of pastel shades. T he m usic given v oluntarily by th e b o y s’ o rchestra was an enjoyable feature and was m uch appreciated. T h e com bined efforts of the 90 hostesses under d ire c tion of Mrs. E vans rendered th e affair most d elig h tfu l th ro u g h o u t. T he guests in passing th ro u g h th e m any room s received unique and varied en tertain m en t by the hostesses of the different room s. F ru it punch and w afers w ere served in the m usic room , w hile bon bons and other dainties w ere served in the room s by in d iv id ual hostesses. T h e reception was pronounced an unqualified su c cess. T he young men took th e ir d e p a rtu re by sin g in g “ G oodnight L a d ie s,” as they passed out th e bread hall en tran ce, w hile th e y o u n g ladies were grouped on the spacious stairw ays and looking over the b alu strad es of the upper hall. Hall and her d a u g h te r, M rs, Jaq u in s, w ere at hom e to fifty of the C hem aw a ladies at th e S u p e rin te n d e n t’s residence on N ew Y e a r’s afternoon. D elicious refresh m ents of salad, sandw iches, coffee, sh erbet and cake were served in th e d ining-room , th e color schem e of p ink and w hite being carried out. A bouquet of pink carnations graced the cen ter of the table. T h e Im sttssess w ere assisted by M rs. M cCrosson and Miss Scholder, who attended in the dining-room . S M A L L E R FO L K S’ P A R T Y T h e sm aller stu d en ts, n u m b erin g about 150, w ere given a good tim e in t he gym nasium on F riday evening th ro u g h the efforts of Mrs. B rew er, M r. and M rs. D elect able refreshm ents consisting of cocoa, tw o k in d s of cake, and popcorn balls w ere served cafeteria style. T h e littie folks were a happy lot and were appreciative.
