T h e in d u strial teacher and a force of boys have arranged to sta rt in clearing th e tim ber off the 30-acre hog lot. T h e ca rp e n te r boys are w orking on some m uch needed ad d itio n s to W inona H all. T he 8th grade in arith m etic are still w o rking in concrete, b u ild in g a floor for the ten n is co u rt and base of a silo. G eorge L ekanoff is m aking good progress in th e carp en ter shop. M r. W oods speaks well of all his boys. I)r. D ickason, field d en tist, has exam ined and w orked on th e teeth of nearly 300 of th e Chem aw a stu d en ts. M rs. D oherty speaks very h ighly of Joe B onner and Moses S haw n w ho are on her house detail in Brew er H all. T h e farm detail is busy these days p lo u g h in g and g ettin g ready to sow oats and vetch for th e n ex t season ’s hay crop. T hom as Bull in S ight, a vocational stu d e n t in th e shoe and harness-m aking d ep artm en t, is doing very well indeed. T he ap p ro ach in g presidential election is of m uch in terest to the stu d e n ts. T h e eig h th g rad ers have been studying about th e electors. T h e second year vocational g irls in the dressm aking d ep a rtm en t have com pleted the uniform sk irts for the first com pany. T h e eig h th grade listened to an in te re stin g talk given bv M artin Colby on the care of an o rch ard , last T h u rsd ay . M artin w orks on the orchard detail. Ivan A nderson, a vocational ca rp e n ter stu d e n t, is one of th e m ost tru stw o rth y and com petent boys in th at d ep artm en t. Mrs. C ulbertson is in receipt of a nice letter from M arie P oulin, Z ortm an, M ontana, in w hich she says she is well and doing nicely as a w aitress in a b o ard ing house. Lewis T ellier is doing good w ork in th e bakery d e p artm en t. Mrs. T eabo says he is g e ttin g to be q u ite a proficient biscuit m aker. Both division of boys and girls at C hem aw a are se cu rin g reg u lar gym nastic exercises in the school gym . Miss Brewer presides at th e piano and M r. Sm ith is in charge. M arguerite R ainville, an old stu d en t of C hem aw a, is atten d in g a train in g school for n u rses at W alla W alla, W ash in g to n . She is m aking good progress and is now in the Ju n io r year. John M urray of the eig h th grade not only takes m uch interest in his vocational tra in in g as engineer, but also show s by the averages in the academ ic w ork th a t he is interested in such studies. C harles J. E der, who has been v isitin g in A laska, is w ith us again this year. H e not oidy is ta k in g up com m ercial w ork, b u t in terests him self in all th a t is good. H e is one of the strong players on the “ v a r s ity ” team . 1 he d em onstration table in th e dom estic science kitchen is being enam eled. E dw ard G ilbeau has ju st started on a c itiz e n ’s suit. E dw ard is a vocational tailor and is doing all the w ork on his suit from th e c u ttin g to sew ing. T h e girls in th e d in in g room are very m uch in te r ested in th e lectures given by Miss S kipton this week on vegetables and different k inds of bread. M r. Swoboda and his detail are p u ttin g up tw enty- one sets of harness to be sent to different reservations in New M exico, A rizona, C alifornia and O regon. E ig h t new iro n in g boards have been set up in the la u n d ry . T h e cem ent work was done by Mr. Carrow and his boys, w hile the carp en ter boys, u n d er Mr. W oods, com pleted the rest of the w ork. T h e p rim ary sew ing dep artm en t are busy as usual p atch in g , m ending and d arn in g . T h ey are at present p atch in g kitchen aprons. Mrs. C ulbertson speaks in very com plim entary term s of Lizzie Mason and Bertha Lee.
