Bertrand Travernier (France, 1981). Coup de Torchon (translated Clean Slate) is an hilarious, cynical and unpredictable comedy with a dreamlike edge to it—or is it nightmare? Only the French could make a film like this. Set in colonial French West Africa, it centers around the character of Lucien Cordier, the only police officer in the small town of Bourkassa. Ineffectual in his public duties and in his private life as well, Lucien shrugs off the abuse he takes from various characters around town—until he realizes that his perpetually innocent expression and fool’s reputation are the perfect cover, and begins to take control. Philippe Noiret is marvel lous as Cordier. Slovenly, unshaven, always wearing the same grubby shirt, he is droll and loveable as well as shockingly cynical. His half cocked philosophizing is wonderfully opportunistic (“we’re all im plicated in each other’s crimes”) and off-the-wall (“the one unanswer able question is: do we scratch our balls because they itch or because it feels good?”). Also wonderful is Isabelle Huppert in the role of Cor dier’s lustful, feisty, and calculating mistress. Bertrand Travernier constantly leads the film through unexpected byways. Even as the social tale of corrupt relationships unfolds, surrealistic images are juxtaposed with an almost symbolic feel. A blind man in a white suite; a silent, sandy plain with small black boys crouching; a wrought-iron Christ being nailed to the cross: images that make you laugh at the incongruity. The African scenery lends itself beautifully to this surreal effect, with its unfamiliar exotic lushness. Both the photography and the script convey this unpredictable humor: guaranteed to keep you laughing even as the cynicism appalls you. —Pamela Seaworthy •sturdy ■refilLabls-' j Cedar Pillows i for Non-Toxc f(ea. control _DKED vn^u_ 2 ■W\Ait enter to: Save Our ecoSystems (SOS) 540 Kingswoodove. Beer & Wine In Review: Come Back to the 5 and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean Robert Altman's latest film. Come Back to the 5 and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean is his first critical success in a number of years. It well deserves its critical acclaim. It is a bizarre, suspenseful and mov ing account of the 20-year reunion of a group of high school friends who hung out together, calling themselves “The Disciples of James Dean.” Despite the spatial limitations which are presented by this theatrical, one-set film, Altman’s direction, Pierre Mignot’s cinema tography and Ed Graczyk’s screenwriting combine to give the au dience a great deal of detail and analysis. Come Back to the 5 and Dime weaves its dramatic narrative tale by cutting back and forth between the 20-year time span—September 30, 1955 to September 30, 1975—since James Dean’s death. This film is and is not about James Dean. It is about delusions and illusions, both in life and in fantasy (read: film). It is about the lives of a few women and men in a small, dried up town in Texas. It is about all the things that people will do or believe in order to survive. As such, this film is a poignant look at the American survival instinct. Come Back to the 5 and Dime is beautifully photographed and technically superb. Per formances by Cher, Sandy Dennis, Karen Black and Sudie Bond are outstanding. —Cathy Sarkowsky (Film reviews by Cathy Sarkowsky can also be heard on KLCC 89.7 FM.)
