hand. Their investigations led to the arrest of a
number of men on various charges connected with the
smuggling of emigrants out of Germany.
The evidence introduced at the trial, which took
place at Hamburg recently, showed that quite a re­
munerative business had been carried on for some time
past by a band of men, at the head of whom was one
Johann Bornos. He and the nine men associated with
him were in the habit of providing would-be emigrants
to the United States with forged seamen’s certificates,
thus enabling them to sign on as sailors on German
ships. Where necessary, they also provided the “sea­
men” with German passports.
Among Bornos’ accomplices were three employees
of the Hamburg America Line who were charged with
having enrolled men to work on board the Hapag
liners, although they were well aware that these illicit
emigrants were in possession of forged papers and
intended to desert in America. They knew, too, that
the shipping company would be liable to pay a penalty
for every man that deserted in an American port.
These Hapag employees often received a fee of as
much as one hundred pounds for each emigrant they
assisted in smuggling into a berth.
Bornos was sentenced to eighteen months’ imprison­
ment and a fine of one hundred dollars for forgery,
bribery and infringement of the German emigration
laws. The other delinquents got off with from three
to ten months’ imprisonment and fines ranging from
five pounds to seventy-five pounds.
Those who always complain about the weather;
it’s either too cold or else it’s too hot, should find comfort
in knowing that there is at least one place in this earthly
realm where it is comfortably ( ?) warm and where those may
go who never get heat enough, and that place is Azizia, Africa,
where the thermometer in the month of September, registers
as high as 136.4 degrees. A lot of people who are trying to
make life as hot and misserable as they can for the rest of
us mortals, and thereby insuring their chances for eventual
transportation to the famous state of hot temperature where
inclement weather is never known, should take a trip down
to Azizia and try how well they" can stand the heat. If it is
too much of a good thing they may return from Azizia and
do certain things that may give them a chance for on eventual
destination where the climate is said to be more ideal.

The average automobile mileage in the United
States is six thousand miles per year, according to the statistics
compiled by the highway bureau of the Department of Agri­
culture. Normally gasoline furnishes the motive power and
if used according to the principles prescribed for motor-vehicle
operation it furnishes safe as well as quick travel, but those
who are mixing “Moonshine” with gasoline, in order to "speed
up,” are making a certain percentage of this mileage extremely
dangerous to themselves and other automobile drivers who
never add any “'kick” to their motive fuel.
Comparing the trip made by Columbus, who
spent seventy days coming to America in a ship which weighed
one hundred tons and carried a crew of fifty-two, with the
one recently made by Hugo Eckener who came the same
distance in eighty hours in an airship weighing ninety tons
and capable of carrying a crew of eighty-three, the indications
are unmistakable that we must have made definite progress
in some particulars.
Vflnle we are wrangling about reforestation and
who is going to do it, the western Canadian farmers are on
the job planting trees for the benefit of posterity. It is said
that these hardworking tillers of the soil, north of Uncle
Sam’s border line, have for the last twenty years been planting
and reforesting their country by putting out approximately
twenty thousand trees per day.
This is just a tip! People who talk about Education
and politeness as though they had all of it, yet say the un-
kindliest things about other people in the unkindliest way
imaginable, are neither educated nor polite themselves. When
you rate them accordingly you increase your self-respect.
Self-respect is an essential element in good citizenship.

There is seemingly little likelihood of immediate
legislation in Congress regarding the disposition of Muscle
Shoals. The leasing of the project to private people has been
fought for several years, Henry Ford having for a long time
been the strongest contender for a long lease. Senator Norris of
Nebraska has been leading the fight for government ownership
operation of the Shoals, and Senator Underwood of Alabama,
has been championing a measure to lease the Shoals. Both the
republican and the democratic representatives are divided on
this point. Muscle Shoals have, now so long been in the public
eye, an object of Congressional and Newspaper Controversies,
that something should possitively be done without delay to
settle this matter and permit public opinion to focus on
something else.

The. Santa Fe railroad company has printed the
sentence “HELP PUT THE ‘I’ IN THINK” on all the letter­
heads used by this great system. Thé suggestion is a
practical one with far reaching application. It isn’t the lack
of thinking ability that is suggested in this sentence, but the
failure to put “I” in it. When a man does some thinking of
