Wednesday, February 9, 2022 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 9 Lady Outlaws skiers continue winning streak Outlaws drop game against Stayton By Rongi Yost Correspondent By Rongi Yost Correspondent The Lady Outlaws hoop- sters fell 48-35 on the road at Stayton on Thursday, February 4. The Eagles are a good team and entered the contest with an 11-4 record. In the Outlaws9 last matchup against Stayton they fell 24-45, so they did perform better this time around. Emma Lutz, Ila Reid, Haleigh Froehlich, and Josie Patton combined for Sisters9 10 points in the first quarter. Stayton put 16 points on the scoreboard to lead at the end of one. In the second quarter, Lutz and Froehlich scored the Outlaws9 only buckets. The Eagles managed to score six and entered the half up by 12. The third quarter proved to be a repeat of the first, with the Eagles outscor- ing the Outlaws 16-10. The Outlaws won the fourth quarter by one point, but ended up with a 13-point loss. Sisters was a bit too quick in shooting the long ball, and finished 3-17 from behind the arc. Lutz and Reid led the Outlaws in scoring with nine points each. Lutz also contributed four rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Payden Petterson tallied seven points, four rebounds, and two assists. Froehlich led the team in rebounds with 10, and also scored five points. Patton pulled down six rebounds, and tallied four points, two assists, and two blocks. Coach Paul Patton praised the play of point guard Emma Lutz, and told The Nugget she had one of her best games of the season. Of the game Patton said, <We played with great effort and made them work for every point they got. Offensively, we ran our action as well as we have all year and got good shots.= <We are improving as a basketball team.= Patton added, <What we need to continue to work on is build- ing confidence in ourselves and playing in a joyful way that makes success more likely.= The Outlaws are cur- rently 1-6 in league and 6-12 overall. Sisters was sched- uled to play on the road at Sweet Home on Tuesday, February 8. They will travel to Newport on Friday. The Outlaws boys and girls ski teams had a bye week after taking first- place finishes at Hoodoo on Wednesday, January 26. The victories maintain a season- long winning streak. The skiers enjoyed beau- tiful sunny skies and a clear starry night, and cold east winds kept the snow dry and firm for fast racing conditions. On the boys9 side, Bela Chladek9s lead over the rest of the league widened with another first-place win with a combined time of 1:34.13. Coach Chladek said, <Bela9s technique is mov- ing into the next level and it9s starting to really sepa- rate him from the rest of the pack.= Corbin Fredland took sec- ond with a combined time of 1:37.28, Styopa Myagkov took fourth (1:43.19); Emerson Backus, eighth (2:00.50); Gus Patton, ninth (2:00.83); Spencer Tisdel, 11th (2:05.37); Cooper Merrill, 14th (2:35.99); and Kellen Petke, 18th (3:09.65). Brody Duey got a 59.95 on his first run, but disquali- fied after he missed a gate on the second run. Jack Turpen also disqualified on his first run, and recorded a 1:14.71 on his second run. Presley Adelt took first place on the girls side with a couple of very clean runs that combined for a time of 1:50.88. First-year racer Ella Eby is catching on to the sport fast and moving up in the ranks. She finished fifth with a combined time of 2:02.98. Chladek said, <Ella was another standout skier. She9s a first-year racer and has started consistently finishing in the top ten. She9s demon- strating a high level of ath- leticism on the course.= Tallis Grummer finished sixth (2:03.25), Ava Riehle 10th (2:21.02), Mae Roth 11th (2:21.36), and Annie Cohen 12th (2:22.95). Piper Adelt got a 1:01.15 on her first run and crashed out on her second run. Lauren Sitz got a 1:18.85 on her first run and disqualified after missing a gate on her second run. Araiya Grummer didn9t finish her first run, but logged a 55.12 on her second run, which was the fastest Nothing says quality like true hand-forged ironwork time on the second run on the girls side. Charlotte Seymour didn9t finish her first run, and scored a 59.07 for a fourth- place finish on the second run. Kiara Martin disquali- fied after she missed a gate on her first run, and logged a 1:16.02 on her second run. Molly Greaney also disquali- fied on her first run, and got a 1:47.49 on her second run. Coach Gabe Chladek said, <The entire team is skiing exceptionally well and having a really enjoy- able season together. The Outlaws9 team dynamic is great this year; they have a great work ethic when it comes to training, and it9s really paying off in the com- petitions. We9ve got the fast- est racers in the league on the team and they9re setting a great example and really pushing the new racers to move up the ranks quickly.= Next up for the Outlaws will be a slalom race at Hoodoo on Wednesday, February 9, and the last league race of the season will be a Giant Slalom at Willamette Pass on Saturday, February 12. From there some of the team will attend an invitational race at Mount Ashland over President9s Day weekend. With the wins the Outlaws already have under their belt, they are starting to look forward to the State Championships, which will be held at Mount Hood Meadows in March. Come & Get Them!
