Wednesday, November 14, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Cemetery to host Wreaths Across America National nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) has announced that historic Camp Polk Cemetery out- side of Sisters, has once again joined in the effort to support the mission to “Remember, Honor, Teach,” as an offi- cial location for 2018. Since 1992, WAA founder Morrill Worcester has always asked volunteers placing remembrance wreaths to take time to read the name on the headstone aloud. “Without the thousands of local volunteers across the country who give their time and energy to support the mission, Wreaths Across America would not exist,” said Karen Worcester. “All our supporters understand the value of remembering the fallen, honoring those who currently serve, and the need to teach the next generation about the sacrifices made for our freedom.” The goal for Camp Polk Cemetery is to raise enough funds to place 41 remem- brance wreaths on the head- stones and say the names of all the local heroes laid to rest there, to ensure that the indi- viduals who served to protect the freedoms of our country are not, and never will be, forgotten. Those interested in vol- unteering for Wreaths Across America, either locally or at Arlington National Cemetery, are invited to visit the WAA website to learn more. National Wreaths Across America Day is a free com- munity event open to all. Community members and businesses can spon- sor wreaths at Camp Polk Cemetery for $15 on the WAA website. Dr. Steve Grossnickle knows the answer — and beyond that, he knows what understanding that difference See SCIENCE on page 28 Pat Addabbo, executive director of Oregon Adaptive Sports (OAS), will make a presentation this week as part of the Sisters Trails Alliance (STA) speaker series on local outdoor recreation and natural resource issues. Oregon Adaptive Sports provides outdoor experiences for individuals with disabili- ties, in order to enhance and improve their lives through enjoyment of activities that other people often take for granted. Through their work, OAS is empowering people of all abilities to fully engage in the outdoor community and to live a healthy and thriving lifestyle. Addabbo’s presentation will discuss new trends in the adaptive outdoor recreation industry, and he will enumer- ate the many opportunities that exist in Central Oregon for people with disabilities to be active in the outdoors. Addabbo is pleased to be able to bring his organization’s mission to the attention of a new audience. “Come to learn,” he said, “about how a disability, disease, or diagnosis, does not equal losing the access and benefits of visiting and recreating in Oregon’s beauti- ful and wild outdoor spaces.” Addabbo has a degree in outdoor leadership and has worked in the adaptive sports industry for the past 10 years. Personally, he calls himself an “avid outdoor athlete” who enjoys skiing, mountain-bik- ing, hiking, trail-running, as well as many other outdoor activities.
