That’s the experience Friends and Neighbors of the Deschutes Canyon Area offers in their guided hikes. One of those is coming up next month, and it ties the group founded in Crooked River Ranch to folks in Sisters Country. Guide Jeff Scheetz will lead an Alder Springs trail hike on Tuesday, August 21, starting at 8 a.m. The hike starts on the canyon rim and descends down Whychus Creek Canyon, passing below cliff towers and a dry water- fall. The group will ford Whychus Creek, about knee depth, to continue on the trail to the confluence with the Deschutes River. The trail ends in a pleasant pon- derosa grove at the water’s edge offering views of vol- canic ash-lava flows with colorful layers on the canyon walls. Trekking poles and wading shoes are strongly recommended. “I … see Wh y ch u s Creek as the thread that ties us together with Sisters,” said group volunteer Diane Rangard. The hikes are limited to eight people to make them a quieter, more intimate experi- ence with the land. Such hikes are only a part of Friends and Neighbors of the Deschutes Canyon Area’s engagement with the land- scape of Central Oregon. The group engages in stew- ardship work, including sig- nificant trail maintenance on Steelhead Falls Trail. “Steelhead Falls Trail has been loved to death,” Rangard said. The group is working on projects to reduce erosion on the trail. They also remove graf- fiti and conduct educa- tion and outreach about the flora and fauna of the area. Member Marilynne Keyser wrote and published Guide to Common Native Plants of the Deschutes Canyon Area, which is available at Paulina Springs Books in Sisters. The group has also created mon- arch butterfly waystations in the area. Rangard told The Nugget that the group was formed by 11 Crooked River Ranch landowners in 2011 and now has 370 members, including several from the Sisters area.
