WED...JULY 11 PHOTO BY JERRY BALDOCK A skydiver dropped in on Sisters Eagle Airport to commence Independence Day festivities on July 4. Sisters celebrates Independence Day By Cody Rheault Correspondent Sisters Eagle Airport hosted its annual airport extravaganza last week for the Fourth of July. This year’s attendance doubled last year’s — 1,500 to 1,800 people turned out. Employees and airport volunteers took to the runway to host the sixth annual event under the title “Rally on the Runway.” This year’s events featured Skydive Awesome introduc- ing the American flag by parachute, and started the day off with runners participating in the 5k run or walk. Starting at 7 a.m., Sisters Rotary vol- unteers provided a pancake breakfast for hungry runners and attendees flowing in for following events. Following the run, the Sisters Outlaws Aviation aircraft provided buyers the chance to win prizes with rubber chickens in a game of high-speed airdrop bingo. Prizes consisted of gifts from local businesses. The Rally on the Runway has become known over the years for its large and diverse gathering of vintage cars as well. Enthusiasts from all around Central Oregon drive their classics to be shown and fawned over by fellow advo- cates. There were 142 cars on display. Many newer, fancier mod- els made their appearance as well and brought new tech- nology to the row of display. Lamborghini and Tesla were among the few makes to show their curves alongside the chrome of their classi- cal rivals, though muscle-era vehicles dominated the lineup. Many cars and trucks appeared later in the morning with the total on-display cars reaching 175 by noon. One of the fastest grow- ing events held every year is the afternoon drag race. This year’s 68 drag competitors featured many of the cars on display as well as motor- cycles and tow trucks ready to burn rubber for the sake of entertainment and bragging rights. For over two hours, machines raced the length of the runway to win unofficial titles. What brings people back every year is more than the just the speed and noise, but the family atmosphere friendly competition brings. Both Benny Benson and Chris Schaad said the event has grown, and felt this year’s Rally was good for the community. There was even a success- ful marriage proposal. All proceeds went to ben- efit the local Sisters Outlaw Aviation program, where high school students have the chance to earn their wings through local programs held at Sisters Eagle Airport.
