20 Wednesday, June 20, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon HABITAT: Group will head to Romania in the fall Continued from page 3 Sisters Habitat has sent over $30,000 overseas and is one of the top five small affiliates in tithe contributions. As with local Habitat affiliates, volunteers are the backbone for building in Romania. They host 3,000 volunteers annually. Half of those volunteers help out through the Global Village program. A typical Global Village trip to Romania includes learning about the culture and sightseeing plus four to five days of building and meeting the family who will move into the house. Participants may extend their stay to see other areas or countries, Jack McDonnell said. The 11-day trip has 11 spots available and will take place in September or October. Cost of the trip is $1,200 plus airfare. For more information contact Jack McDonnell at jmjaaneho@ msn.com or call the Sisters Habitat office at 541-549- 1193. Anyone interested in Habitat homeownership can visit the Sisters Habitat web- site at www.sistershabitat. org and read the homeown- ership guidelines for more information. Quilt raises funds to help Furry Friends Foundation Valerie Fercho-Tillery’s latest in a series of quilts made to support Furry Friends Foundation celebrates some- thing besides happy dogs. This year’s quilt honors America’s national parks. “They’re kind of under siege at the moment,” she told The Nugget. “I kind of wanted to show that our national parks are something our tax dollars pay for and something we should treasure and hold dear.” The quilt features dogs frolicking among the Grand Canyon; Arches National P a r k ; t h e E v e rg l a d e s ; Yosemite; and among the redwoods. This is the sixth year that Furry Friends has offered a fundraiser quilt — and the fifth quilt Fercho-Tillery has made. One year a patron donated the quilt back for resale to increase its impact. This quilt took about three months to make. “I am thrilled with Valerie’s creation this year,” said FFF founder Kiki Dolson. “Truly one-of-a-kind and beautifully detailed. We are so fortunate to receive another of her quilts for our fundraiser.” The funds raised through sale of tickets for a draw- ing are needed now more than ever. Furry Friends Foundation helps families in Sisters by operating two pet-food banks and providing no-cost spay/neuter and vacci- nation sponsorships and assis- tance with emergency medical needs to families in financial hardship. “Donations have really dropped off this year, I think at least in part because our visibility is less since our move from The Nugget office, but in turn the number of families we are helping has increased,” Dolson said. “The no-cost spay/neuter sponsor- ships are up by about 30 per- cent. Purchasing tickets to win this beautiful quilt is just one of the many ways to support Furry Friends.” The quilt will be on regular display at the Furry Friends office through the summer and at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show on Saturday, July 14, at Fir Street Park. Tickets are available online at www.furryfriendsfound ation.org, and at the Furry PHOTO BY JIM CORNELIUS Valerie Fercho-Tillery and her husband, Randall Tillery, display the 2018 Furry Friends Foundation Quilt, Bark for our Parks.
