Wednesday, April 25, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 13 SCA weathers financial storm By Jim Cornelius Editor in Chief PHOTO BY JERRY BALDOCK A series of one-act plays is on tap at The Belfry next week. Local actors to perform at The Belfry Thespians from around Central Oregon will entertain audiences when they hit the stage during the third annual Now You’re Talking One- Acts presented by Silent Echo Theater Company (SETC) May 3-5 at The Belfry. Producer Marla Manning said she is excited for this year’s event, which will fea- ture two plays written by Bend playwrights. “In the (Play) Pen,” writ- ten by Laura Lee Coffman, is a humorous play about the secret world of babies when the parents are away. It will be directed by Laura Lee’s hus- band, Michael Coffman, and features Bend actors as well as long-time Sisters resident Lisa Fetrow. In a more poignant setting, “It’s Not Really Suicide” is about two brothers and their emotional relationship and their road to redemption. It was written by Bend play- wright Persephone Vandergrift and will be directed by Sisters resident Rhonda Townsend Schantz. Schantz has been involved with SETC since its incep- tion. She has directed and acted and serves on the SETC board of directors. She loves the theater and is glad to have an opportunity to “play” in Sisters with SETC and also as a performer with Sisters Classic Old-Time Radio Experience (SCORE). The evening will be filled with seven funny and heart- warming plays ranging from 10 to 20 minutes long, said Manning. All seven of the one-act plays are premieres, said Manning. She loves to be able to provide an opportunity for playwrights to showcase their work. She invites local playwrights to share their creations for future theater events. Performances are May 3, 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. at The Belfry, with a Saturday mati- nee at 2 p.m. Tickets are avail- able at bendticket.com or cash only at the door, $16 for adults and $12 for seniors (65+) and students. Doors open one hour prior to each show. For information email silentecho theatercompany@gmail.com or call 541-719-8779. Sisters Christian Academy (SCA) has weathered a finan- cial storm that threatened to swamp the small, private Christian school. According to Principal Cheryl Peterson, the support of the Sisters commu- nity has ensured that the acad- emy will continue through this year and will operate through the next school year. While ongoing fundraising and changes to the business model are necessary, Peterson reported, a future that seemed very much in doubt a few weeks ago is now looking much more secure. “The day we told parents we might have to close… it was a sad day,” Peterson said. “In five weeks, people from the community (and) a couple of different foundations have written big checks — and small checks.” Students pitched in and made crafts for sale and donated the proceeds, and one 4-year-old pre-schooler offered Peterson the $1.25 contents of his piggy bank. “I lost it,” she said. “Not in front of him. I wrote him a thank-you note just like I do for the big checks that have come in. What a little heart.” According to Peterson, some donations came from May 3-5 / 7:30 PM Get ready to party on CINCO DE MAYO! Saturday, y , MAY 5 SPECIALS! Peterson said that the fund- ing received to date is suffi- cient to keep the school going. However, she acknowledged that ongoing fundraising will be necessary. “We’ll continue to need to raise funds to complete next year,” she said. “(The board is) confident now we can make it all the way through.” The school plans to stage events that will not only raise money but also connect the school with the community.
