Wednesday, April 11, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 7 Girls lacrosse racks up 19 goals in win By Rongi Yost Correspondent GRAPHIC PROVIDED Team roping featured on rodeo poster The 2018 Sisters Rodeo poster highlights a required skill in use even today on ranches throughout the West: Team Roping is part of the job description of cowboys, both historically and currently. Team Roping is an everyday thing. It is still used to catch cattle for branding, vaccinating and doctoring. — John Leavitt “Team Roping is an every- day thing,” Rodeo board member and former team roper John Leavitt explained. “It is still used to catch cattle for branding, vaccinating and doctoring.” The poster is another collaboration by Dyrk Godby, Western artist; Gary Albertson, nature photogra- pher; and Dennis Schmidling, poster designer. All three are Sisters Country residents. According to Rodger Dwight, Sisters Rodeo direc- tor, “We like to feature one event each year, and realized we had not produced a team roping poster since 1997. I think Dyrk did a great job of showing the essence of team- work among the two contes- tants and their horses.” The poster depicts a header on a palomino cow horse and a heeler on a sorrel. In a skilled maneuver, the header ropes a steer’s head and then turns the steer to allow the heeler to rope both hind feet and bring the steer to a stop. Timing is everything. In a new twist to Sisters Rodeo poster tradition, this poster celebrates a distant Mount Washington, Black Butte, and Mount Jefferson as the backdrop. The poster is available for purchase at many Central Oregon locations: In Sisters at Ray’s Food Place, Open Range, Dixie’s, Heritage USA and the rodeo ticket office; in Bend at The Boot Barn and High Desert Ranch and Home; in Redmond at Open Range; in Prineville at WW Western Wear and in Madras at Ag West Supply. Sisters Rodeo will begin June 6 with Xtreme Bulls, followed by four rodeo per- formances June 8-10. The Lady Outlaws shots were right on target and hit the back of the net over and over again in their 19-13 road win against Marist on Thursday, April 5. Sisters started off a bit slow, but gained energy and excitement and at the half were on top 10-8. Kaylee Huber was strong at cen- ter and had three draw controls. The Outlaws were fired up as they entered the second half of the contest, and tallied nine additional goals, four of them from Ellie Cook. Sophia Bianchi scored Sisters’ final goal to wrap up the Outlaws’ scoring spree. Sisters also did a great job of getting the ball back from the Spartans. Pearl Gregg had four caused turnovers and did a good job of working both sides of the field. Sisters prevented Marist from scoring in the final thirty seconds of the contest, when goalie Makila Lajko made a tremendous save at the top right of the cage. Lajko finished with a 43 per- cent save rate. Ellie Cook had a phenom- enal game and finished with eight goals, half of them by wrapping around the crease. Huber tallied five goals in the contest and also posted nine draw controls for the game. Gregg recorded five goals and five ground balls. Sisters was to play at Redmond on Monday, April 9. The team will match up against Grant on Saturday, April 14.
