Wednesday, April 11, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Wildfire season is on the horizon Sisters Country usually experiences at least one wild- fire every year, and will likely see another one this season. Wildfires like last year’s Milli Fire can be devastating to your home if you’re not prepared. Making some sim- ple changes around your prop- erty could be the difference between losing your home and not suffering any damage at all during a wildfire. The Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District is hosting a two-hour class on Thursday, April 26, to teach area residents how they can make their homes more resis- tive to loss or damage from wildfires. Gary Marshall, Oregon’s wildfire field repre- sentative for the National Fire Protection Association will teach the free class. With a good understanding of wildfire hazards and miti- gation strategies, community residents can effectively lower the wildfire risk and losses to their homes and neigh- borhoods. Research around home destruction vs. home survival in wildfires point to embers (firebrands) and small flames with low intensity as the primary heat sources that ignite homes from wildfires. Embers are burning pieces of airborne wood and/or vegeta- tion that can be carried more than a mile through wind in front of the wildfire, starting small spot fires on and around the home. The wildfire is often totally disconnected from neighborhoods, but yet homes ignite and burn. There are methods for homeowners to prepare their homes to withstand ember attacks and minimize the likelihood of flames or sur- face fire touching the home. Experiments, models and post-fire studies have shown homes often ignite due to the condition of the home and everything immediately around it, up to 100 feet in most cases. This is called the Home Ignition Zone. This class will teach some simple steps to help residents reduce the risk of structure ignition before there is smoke on the horizon. The class will be held at the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District Community Hall from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 26.
