4 Wednesday, March 28, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Girls tennis loses two Girls lacrosse is playing well By Rongi Yost Correspondent The Lady Outlaws posted a big 15-3 win over Thurston on Monday, March 19, and two days later fell 22-11 to Summit. They will take a week off for spring break and resume play with a game at Marist on Thursday, April 5. In Monday’s match- up against Thurston, the Outlaws controlled the game from the get-go, and won 15 of the 18 draw controls. At the half, Sisters was on top 10-2. Ten different players scored for the Outlaws. Olivia Hougham, Ellie and Mia Cook, Sydney Head and Kaylee Huber all recorded two goals each. Skylar Wilkins, Sophia Bianchi, Mary Root, Pearl Gregg and Mirjam Ehrler added one goal apiece. Mikila Lajko had 10 saves in the goal. “The defense did an amazing job controlling the midfield,” said Coach Mikaela Trott. “They dou- bled and tripled the ball as it left the opponent’s defense.” Although they lost two days later, the Outlaws played an outstanding game against the Storm, and tallied an unprecedented 11 points in the game. “This game was perhaps the best the Outlaws have ever played,” said Trott. “We actually worked the ball really well. We have never scored higher than four points against Summit in any game we’ve ever played against them.” The Outlaws didn’t have a great start, and within the first three minutes the Storm had tallied four goals. “We really needed to shake off our nerves and just get to work,” said Trott. Ellie Cook scored Sisters’ first goal of the game. Cook was fed the ball as she made a beautiful cut toward the center and then shot low to the right side of the goalie for the score. Mia Cook, Huber, and Wilkins also scored a goal and at the half the Outlaws trailed 13-4. Just prior to the end of the first half, Sydney Head suf- fered a concussion. Trott said, “Sydney got the concussion from a pass that one of the Summit play- ers had to a player who cut into the middle of the eight- meter fan. It wasn’t mali- cious, but it was a huge loss By Rongi Yost Correspondent to our team to have one of our best players go out of the game.” In the second half, the Outlaws tacked on six more goals. Several players scored for the Outlaws. Ellie Cook led the scoring effort with four goals, Mia Cook and Wilkins scored two, and Huber and Head scored one each. Mary Root scored her goal on a penalty and recorded Sisters’ one and only assist in the game. Trott said, “The best part of the game was the team’s communication and cohe- sion. We were able to find each other on the field. We passed the ball beautifully on transition, and when we were on offense, we were constantly moving, which in the past has been an issue. We’re looking forward to our next match-up against Summit. We feel like we can really bring it and beat them.” On Monday, April 19, the Lady Outlaws fell 2-8 to Mountain View, and three days later they only won one match against Bend High. Monday’s match was against a very good 5A squad, and Coach Crystal Tosello was impressed with how well her girls played. Sisters’ No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 doubles teams tallied wins in their matches, and all three went to match-breakers. Hawley Harrer and Rylee Weber, at No. 1, defeated Kelsey Leighton and Moruya Haney 2-6, 6-1, 10-5. Both Harrer and Weber are athletic and experienced tennis play- ers. It took a while for them to get into their rhythm, but once they did, they were a force to be reckoned with. Mattie Mynatt and Sophia Silva, at No. 3, defeated Maria Larrenta and Felicia Hall 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. Mynatt’s great serves and Silva’s aggressive net game were instrumental in their win. At the No. 4 spot, Lola Green and Hallie Schwartz beat Savanna Caldentey and Kailei Ouellette 6-7, 6-4, 10-5. Green and Schwartz are both new to tennis, but according to Tosello they have some of the best footwork on the team. “They hustle to chase down every ball,” said Tosello. “They work well together and are getting the hang of the sport very quickly.” The Outlaws were short a couple of their key single players, so some new fresh- men were able to step in at the No. 3 and No 4 singles positions. “Shelby McCauley and Katie Springer had awe- some attitudes and won some games, even though they had never played singles before,” said Tosello. Three days later, the Outlaws posted only one win in their match against Bend High. “Bend is a very good team and we were missing a few of our top singles and doubles players, so we were not surprised by the loss,” said Tosello. “The Sisters girls were fearless and had a great attitudes throughout the match. The match helped us learn that we need to work on serves and taking balls on the rise, which I’m excited to work on at our next practice.” The Sisters girls were fearless and had a great attitudes... — Coach Crystal Tosello Rylee Weber, in her first appearance at No. 1 singles, defeated Susie Garcia 6-3, 6-1, and was the lone win for the Lady Outlaws. Tosello said, “Rylee was more consistent than her opponent, and didn’t let the challenge of playing singles intimidate her. Her backhands were awesome, and she hit the ball as hard as any girl on the Bend team.” The Lady Outlaws’ next match will be on Tuesday, April 3, at Madras. On Thursday, two days later, they will play at home against Corbett. 4 OUT OF 5 MEN SAY THEIR HAIR FEELS STRONGER, LOOKS THICKER... METAMORPHOSIS 541-549-1784, 161-C N. Elm St. Men’s Haircuts!
