Wednesday, December 27, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Highway 22 reopened in Santiam Canyon Highway 22 west of Sisters is open in Santiam Canyon following nearly a week of clean-up and repairs to the road after a tanker car- rying over 11,000 gallons of gasoline crashed Friday night, December 15. Work crews labored in difficult conditions for sev- eral days to get the road open in time for the Christmas holidays, since Highway 22 provides a vital link between Central Oregon and the northern Willamette Valley. The wreck that forced the closure occurred just before 11 p.m. on December 15, near milepost 64. A 2001 Kenworth Central Petro fuel truck lost traction on the icy road and rolled over, coming to a stop blocking the high- way. The fuel tank ruptured and caught fire, with the blaze spreading to nearby brush. The driver of the fuel truck was identified as See HIGHWAY 22 on page 29 Sisters crash sends man to jail A California man is in jail and a Sisters woman was taken to the hospital after a motor-vehicle crash on Locust Street early Wednesday morn- ing, December 20. According to Deschutes County Sheriff ’s Office Lieutenant Mike Biondi, 25-year-old Breanna McClung of Sisters was delivering newspapers in a Ford Explorer at about 5:06 a.m., and was stopped on the southbound shoulder of South Locust Street dispens- ing papers when she saw a Subaru headed south on Locust at a high rate of speed. The Subaru struck McClung’s vehicle head-on with enough force to push it backwards over 30 feet on the snow-covered roadway, Biondi reported. McClung was trans- ported to St. Charles Medical Center-Redmond with non- life-threatening injuries. Responding deputies arrested 55-year-old Timothy Yett of Yosemite, California, on charges of third-degree assault; driving under the influence of intoxicants; and reckless driving. He was transported to jail with a bail set at $20,000. Sisters Fire District per- sonnel responded to the crash, which blocked the south- bound lane of Locust Street. PHOTO BY JIM CORNELIUS Laura T. Lewis, a Portland singer-songwriter, performed at Cork Cellars in a benefit that raised over $6,000 for the Sisters Cold Weather Shelter. Community supports shelter By Sue Stafford Correspondent In the spirit of the season, members of the community stepped up last Thursday night in support of the Sisters Cold Weather Shelter, donat- ing a total of $6,350 at an evening of music held at Cork Cellars. Metabolic Maintenance’s Ed Fitzjarrel put up a chal- lenge of $2,500 to be matched by attendees, who upped the ante and donated $3,850. Fitzgerald and his musical partner Joe Leonardi were joined by Jim Cornelius and Mike Biggers and Portland singer-songwriter Laura T. Lewis for an evening of music, fun, and fundraising. In addition to the money from the night of music, a check for $1,400 for the shel- ter was left at the library by a donor. “The Sisters Dance Academy held a fundraiser for us and raised a little over $500 for the shelter as well,” reported shelter co-chairman Lois Kaping. Sisters Girl Scout Troop 10732 placed large barrels in the local schools prior to Christmas vacation and col- lected food, bedding, cloth- ing, paper products, and other needed supplies for the shelter. “The whole community, religious and others, have really stepped up. It’s just amazing,” Kaping reported. “From the Girl Scouts to an 85-year-old.” The shelter, which opened See SHELTER on page 30 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR BOARDS, GROUPS, CLUBS Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
