PHOTO BY JIM CORNELIUS Site work is underway on a seven-acre parcel that will house The Lodge at Sisters. By Sue Stafford Correspondent The fence is up around the seven-acre parcel of ground adjacent to the Sisters post office, between Locust and Larch. Site work has begun on The Lodge at Sisters assisted living facility. According to Peter Hoover of Thrivify LLC, developers of the facility, “Mother Nature gave us a very welcome holi- day gift of a mild winter, enabling us to begin site work on December 4. Now, if win- ter can just continue to be mild a while longer, we hope- fully will stay on schedule and meet our targeted opening date of fall 2018.” The property and proj- ect was previously slated for development by Pinnacle Alliance Group, headed by Mark Adolf of Yakima, who failed to secure all the nec- essary funding and eventu- ally was plagued by legal problems. “We purchased the project, the land, and the right to use the building design from the prior developer this past July. Other assisted-living projects were considered, but my being part of Sisters Country and having a project that was ‘permit-ready’ gave the nudge to proceed with the purchase of this project,” explained Hoover. See THE LODGE on page 29 Sisters recycling center Setting sigpts on safe spooting pit witp illegal dumping By Jim Cornelius Editor By Jim Cornelius Editor Sisters Recycling Center is heavily used — especially right now when folks are hauling holiday packaging out of the house. Not all of that use is beneficial. The City of Sisters Public Works Department, which maintains the site in the industrial park, reports an increase in inappropri- ate recycling and illegal dumping. Some of the inappropriate use is probably due to lack of understanding as to what can and can’t be recycled. For example, regular card- board can be recycled; waxed cardboard can’t. There are large signs at the center Inside... detailing what can and can’t be placed in co-mingled bins. (See “Recycling Preparation Guide” on page 18.) Recycling loads that are “contaminated” with non- recyclable items have to be sorted and can be rejected, which can mean recyclable materials may end up in land- fills — which defeats the purpose of the process. With increased pressure on recy- cling due to changes in the market (see sidebar story, page 19), keeping recycling “clean” is more important than ever. High Country Disposal, who collects recycling throughout Sisters Country, notes that people often See RECYCLING on page 19 There are a lot of people out in the woods these days. Some are hiking; some are riding mountain bikes; some are riding horseback; some are target shooting. With recreation on the Deschutes National Forest increasing 15 to 20 percent over the past three years, the Forest Service is seek- ing to raise awareness of all activities so that conflicts are minimized. Forest Service spokesper- son Jean Nelson-Dean told The Nugget that many rec- reational users — especially those new to the area — don’t realize that target shooting is allowed almost everywhere on public lands (see excep- tions in the sidebar story on page 24).
