(There are several exemptions.) An active license means the contractor is bonded and insured. Go to www.oregon.gov/CCB Sisters helps families during holiday season Sisters families in finan- cial straits will celebrate a festive Christmas thanks to a years-long partnership of volunteers who put together an annual food and gift drive. Sisters Kiwanis oper- ates a food drive to provide Christmas dinner and more to local families, while Sisters volunteer firefighters gather gifts for children of those families. The Furry Friends Foundation takes care of the needs of families’ pets. Julie Spor of the Sisters- Camp Sherman Fire District noted that the program served a total of 187 families this year. The toy and gift drive provided presents for approximately 175 children. Donors provide gifts listed on ornaments on giving trees set up at Ray’s Food Place, and volunteers shop for addi- tional gifts. Spor said that the program received several significant cash contributions last week — evidence of the extraordi- nary generosity of the Sisters community. The Furry Friends holi- day pet food drive began in 1992 under the auspices of The Nugget Newspaper. This year marks its 25th year. “It was always a goal of mine to create a nonprofit to maintain a year-round pet food bank, hence Furry Friends Foundation was formed five years ago,” said former Nugget publisher and FFF founder Kiki Dolson. The 1992 drive helped about 50 pets and 26 fami- lies. Over the next 25 years the food drive has fed over 7,100 pets “This year pet numbers were 346,” Dolson said. “We distributed pet food, toys, coats and treats for 346 pets this past Saturday, includ- ing 110 cats, 15 kittens, 190 dogs, 2 puppies, 3 guinea pigs, 5 parakeets, 2 cocka- tiels, 2 doves, 2 parrots, 6 rabbits, 4 chickens and even 5 goldfish.” Dolson said, “I want to thank everyone who donated this year and all the wonder- ful volunteers who helped make this happen.” To see how donations were spent, view a short video taken Saturday morn- ing, before distribution began at http://smu.gs/2ByxSyJ. Dolson sold The Nugget in November, and Furry Friends is now in a new location. Furry Friends Foundation is still accepting much- needed year-end donations. They can be mailed to P.O. Box 1175, Sisters, OR 97759 or dropped off at the new FFF location in the Sisters Art Works Building, 204 W.
