Huntsberger, Jr. Walter LeRoy Shuey November 22, 1931 — November 1, 2017 March 7, 1938 — October 3, 2017 Dr. John P. Huntsberger, Jr., aged 85, passed away November 1 in Austin, Texas. He was born on November 22, 1931, in Los Angeles, California to John, Sr., and Dorothy Huntsberger. John was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He served his country dur- ing the Korean War, sta- tioned at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska. He had brief dispatch to Kotzebue, Alaska, where he copied Chinese and Russian code, one of very few who could handle spark-gap transmis- sion and the Cyrillic alpha- bet without error. John completed his undergraduate studies at Portland State University, earned his master’s and doctoral degrees at Oregon State University, and was later recruited to a posi- tion in science education at the University of Texas at Austin, where for 20 years he taught graduate science education students how to teach geology, astronomy and meteorology. John was an outstanding educator, the recipient of several teach- ing excellence awards at UT, a lifelong learner and a lifelong teacher. His travels on UT field trips took him to Costa Rica, throughout Texas and the Southwest to Wyoming. Geology and History of Science took him to China; visiting and teach- ing with former students took him to Taiwan. John loved Central Oregon and Sisters Country. During his tenure at Oregon State University and resid- ing in the Corvallis area, he spent much of his time with his young family vacation- ing in Camp Sherman and fly fishing the Metolius. Upon John’s retirement at UT, John returned to Central Oregon in 2010, residing in Camp Sherman until 2017. John was also a remark- able musician, vocalist, performer and emcee. Locally, nationally and internationally known, he played four-string banjo, the banjo integral to Dixieland jazz and music of the 1920s. John founded the Northwest Banjo Band in Corvallis in 1968 and the Austin Banjo Club in Texas in 1975. He traveled yearly to four-string jamborees in several states, in Canada and in Germany and was “The Banjo” at Shakey’s Pizza Parlor and for Dixieland bands in Oregon and in Central Texas for a total of 30 years or more. An amateur astronomer, John was an active member of the Austin Astronomical Society and a founder of the Sisters Astronomy Club in Sisters. He traveled with telescope to the annual Texas Star Party, near Ft. Davis, Texas, to star parties in south Texas, Oregon, California and Idaho and made five trips to the “Deepest South Texas Star Safari” near Coonabarabran, New South Wales, Australia. The tele- scope traveled separately! Dr. Huntsberger is sur- vived by his children: Steve Huntsberger of Salt Lake City, Utah, Paul Huntsberger of Austin, Texas, and Ruth H o w a r d o f L a Q u i n t a , California; and grandchil- dren, Ian Huntsberger, Audrey Huntsberger, Claire Huntsberger and Aaron Huntsberger. There will be a celebra- tion of John’s Life here in Sisters Country and in the Willamette Valley in early 2018. Walter LeRoy Shuey of Sisters passed away at home on October 3, 2017. He was 79. Walt was born in Grant, Nebraska on March 7, 1938. His family moved to Dundee, Oregon in 1947, then settled in Newberg, Oregon. Walt joined the Marines in January 1956, and was stationed at Camp P e n d l e t o n , C a l i f o r n i a until January 1959. While in California, Walt met his future wife, Marleen Darnell, in September 1958, and they were married on July 4, 1959. They stayed in Southern California and had three daughters, then moved to Newberg, Oregon in 1965 where they raised C. Frank Fraga March 9, 1938 — November 1, 2017 Rev. C. Frank Fraga was born March 9, 1938, and went to be with his Lord November 1. Rev. Fraga served six years in the Air Force before becoming a minster in 1965. He served as a Pastor of three churches in California: Lone Pine, Port Hueneme and Carmichael. His next pastorate was in Krosnearsk, Siberia, fol- lowed by a teaching position at a Bible School in Irkutsk, Siberia during the year of 1993. Upon his return to America in 1994, he became the Pastor of New Hope Christian Center (formerly their family. Walt worked for Adec for 26 years and retired in September 1993. Walt was a member of the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse and the Hawghunters Bass Club. His three daugh- ters rode POAs and Walt trailered the ponies to many shows during those years, from Washington to Southern Oregon. Walt and Marlene built their retirement home in Sisters and moved there in September 1993, after they retired. Walt was a volunteer for Oregon State Police fish and wildlife. He was marshal at several of the area golf courses and enjoyed golf. He is survived by his wife, Marlene; daughters Michelle Pappas of Bend, Sandy Harding of Newberg, and Kathy Shuey of Portland; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on October 14 at St. Edward the Martyr Catholic Church. Trinity Christian Center) in Sisters. Pastor Fraga served this congregation for 20 years until his retirement in June 2014. Since his retire- ment, he remained active in pulpit and teaching ministry until his home-going. Throughout his life he was deeply passionate about missions. His mission work took him to Mexico, Greece, Honduras, Russia, and Africa. Rev. Fraga is survived by: Mary, his wife of 61 years; two sons, Robert and Mike; one daughter, Sherrie, and their families which consists of three grandsons and four granddaughters and their spouses; three great-grandsons, and three great-granddaughters. Celebration of Life ser- vices will be held in both California and Oregon; dates to be announced.
