Wednesday, November 8, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Cold weather shelter needs monitors By Sue Stafford Correspondent The Sisters Cold Weather Shelter (SCWS) will open its doors on Wednesday, November 15, at 6 p.m. at The Hangar annex behind Sisters Community Church, 1300 W. McKenzie Hwy. The snowfall this past weekend underscores the necessity of being able to offer a warm, safe place and nourishing meals for those in the Sisters community who lack secure, permanent housing. The shelter is currently in the process of hiring four paid overnight monitors for the shelter who will work in pairs: two to five nights per week from midnight to 7 a.m. These positions are part-time seasonal work start- ing immediately and ending March 15, 2018. The pay is $13 per hour. For a complete job description email sisters cws@gmail.com or look at the Sisters Cold Weather Shelter Facebook page. A team of SCWS volun- teers in Sisters will conduct initial screening interviews. Those who qualify will undergo a background check and an employment interview with The Shepherd’s House staff. If hired, new monitors will receive training and be required to shadow experi- enced monitors. Volunteers for the early shift from 5 p.m. to mid- night, and for providing din- ner and breakfast meals for shelter guests, can sign up on SignUp.com at Sisters Cold Weather Shelter. A link to the SignUp page can be found on the SCWS Facebook page. For those who do not use Facebook, call the shelter information phone number 541-719-8415. All monitors must undergo a background check, which costs $11. Forms for the back- ground checks are available at the Sisters library and may be returned there with $11. When the background check is com- plete, new monitors will be notified and can then sign up for shifts. Returning monitors who did the background check last winter are not required to do another one. People requiring camping equipment must first secure a voucher stating what they need from the Family Access Network office located in the Sisters School District administration office at 525 E. Cascade Ave. Last winter the commu- nity’s generous support of the SCWS was heartwarm- ing, with restaurants and indi- vidual volunteers and orga- nizations providing meals, businesses offering clothing, food, propane, and carpets for the floor. Local dentists provided hygiene products. The Deschutes County jail supplied sleeping mats. (See “Cold weather shelter needs donations,” page 5.) One of the most meaning- ful programs was the foster program for shelter guests’ dogs, to be offered again this year. Furry Friends has donated a collapsible crate to the shelter. A refrigerator has been donated for use at The Hangar, and last year an enclosed trailer was donated in which supplies can be moved from one shelter location to another and stored over the months the shelter is closed.
