8 Wednesday, May 3, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Girls lacrosse wrags ug season with back-to-back wins By Rongi Yosd Correspondent The Lady Outlaws wrapped up their season with back-to-back wins on Saturday, April 29. Sisters defeated Crescent Valley 22-12 in the first game, and followed with a 16-4 win over West Albany. Sisters racked up 22 goals in their first game against the Raiders, and goals were spread out among several players. Senior Bree Papworth scored six goals, Katelyn Josten and Kaylee Huber each scored four, Sydney Head and Olivia Godfrey each contributed three, and Ellie and Mia Cook each added one. The Cook twins both got yellow cards in the contest. Mia received two yellow cards within the first 10 min- utes, which resulted in a red card, and was unable to play the remainder of the game. “I really didn’t feel like the yellow cards were super-deserved,” said Trott. “Having Mia out was a defi- nite loss, as she’s one of my most versatile players on the field.” Sydney Head and Kaylee Huber switched in and out at center and grabbed int G N I R SP ACTION several draw controls. Huber recorded six, Head tallied four, and Olivia Godfrey had five. Godfrey was out the majority of the second half due to an injury. Olivia received a dangerous check to the head and had to be seen by the athletic trainer. Papworth’s goals were the highlight of the game. Three of her goals came in this way: McKenna Jones would pass the ball from the defensive end to midfielder Sydney Head, who sent it on to Ellie Cook at attack. Cook threw the ball straight to Papworth, who was waiting. Bree would sneak behind the goal and run and pop out to take the final pass, and toss it right into the goal above the goalie’s head. “We were able to take the ball from the defense to the offense with three really clean passes, and no drops, which is something we’ve been working on in practice the last few weeks,” said Trott. “The Crescent Valley defense just couldn’t keep up.” The team played really well with their ground balls and tallied over 30. The top players with ground balls were Head with eight and Huber with five. Head also had three caused turnovers, and Josie Aylor recorded two caused turnovers. Sasha Komar played in the box, recorded 11 saves and had 12 against her. “She was just under a 50 percent save rate, which is wonderful,” stated Trott. The Outlaws’ defense did well at doubling the ball coming down the field and got in front of their oppo- nents, which was key to why they were able to win by such a large margin. Last year, the Outlaws lost in overtime at home to Crescent Valley and the fol- lowing game beat them at home in overtime. Trott said, “We definitely came onto the field feeling really ready to beat this team clean. It was a really scrappy game, and wasn’t a super- safe or clean game. The other team had a few yellow cards as well, which was a little scary for us, but overall, the girls played very well.” Sisters barely had five minutes to rest before they had to start their game against West Albany. From there, the defense took over, and they were able to put the ball in the back of the net also. Godfrey scored four goals, McKenna Jones scored two, and Aylor, Sophia Bianchi, and Keely Roberson each added one. Godfrey tallied a record 12 ground balls in the con- test, which Trott told The Nugget was really fun because the team nicknamed Olivia “Scoopie” because she’s so good at scooping up the ball. “It was a really fun game for us,” said Trott. “We were able to mix it up and enjoy playing one more time as a team. It felt like we finally meshed, which is always hard as a coach to see your team mesh the last week of games.” The Lady Outlaws will only lose one senior, Bree Papworth, and will add five incoming freshman to the squad next year. The Outlaws finished their season at 7-7. The Outlaws knocked in six quick goals within the first five minutes of play and took a 6-0 lead. “I never want to be that team that destroys another team by over 20 points, and we definitely could have,” said Trott. “I just wasn’t comfortable with that. I feel the Outlaws are really good about having good sports- manship and we really enjoy playing this team. So, I switched things up.” Trott moved the defense to offense, the offense to the midfield, and most of the middies moved back to play defense. The only person to keep her normal position was senior Bree Papworth. Trott told The Nugget it was Bree’s last game ever, and attack is definitely her position. The first six goals came from Sisters’ starting attack players.
