All are invited to meet and enjoy a cup of soup with bread from Melvin’s Fir Street Market. Immediately following the light meal, Professor Gregg Walker will lead a workshop where attendees will gain skills in constructive confrontation. C4C Program Committee chair Maret Pajutee issued the invitation, saying, “Wisdom says ‘breaking bread’ together By Sue Stafford Correspondent Citizens4Community is offering their first quarterly forum of 2017 on Wednesday, January 25, at the Sisters Fire Station Community Hall, 301 S. Elm St. “Soaring Toward Common Ground” will explore the con- cept of what it means to “Be Agreeable” (the sixth ten- ant of Speak Your Peace) — even when you disagree. Mentors help students find their path students define their goals and dreams for their future,” said Rick Kroytz, ASPIRE coordinator at Sisters High School. The program is always looking for more volunteers willing to become mentors. All it takes is a desire to work with students – no col- lege degree or special expe- rience is required. Training and materials are provided, and new volunteers begin by shadowing current mentors. Most new mentors begin with two or three students with By Sue Stafford Correspondent Started at Sisters High School (SHS) about 11 years ago, ASPIRE is the State of Oregon’s mentoring program that matches adult volunteer mentors with students to help them meet their education and training goals beyond high school. Circle of Friends and Heart of Oregon YouthBuild worked together on the MLK holiday on Monday, January 16 to build and donate bird- houses for the Seed to Table program and Harmony Farm Sanctuary. Sisters Eagle Airport donated the use of hangar five at the airport for the work party. Teens from the Heart of Oregon program worked one-on-one with younger children who are part of the Circle of Friends mentor- ship program in construct- ing dozens of birdhouses. The teens are learning and applying construction skills in the YouthBuild program, and the birdhouse project allowed them to pass on some basic skills to younger kids. “It’s pretty fun to watch them work with the younger kids, “said Heart of Oregon coordinator Chelsea Anttila. “It gives them the opportunity to teach someone younger than them.” The youngsters were responsive. Nine-year-old Jayden was churning out his third birdhouse when he paused for a moment to talk with The Nugget. He explained that he has lots of experience in construction. “I go in the summer with my dad and help him remodel houses,” he said. Kay Johnson has men- tored Alexis in Circle of Friends for the past four years. She watched smiling as she pounded in nails under the watchful instruction of Karly Bell. “Isn’t this fun?” Johnson said. “It’s a great partnership between the organizations.” SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR BOARDS, GROUPS, CLUBS Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
