Wednesday, December 28, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Council votes to seat Richard Esterman By Sue Stafford Correspondent On a 3-2 vote, the current Sisters City Council voted to affirm that Richard Esterman qualifies under the City Charter to serve as a member of the Council because his intent has been to be a resi- dent of the city. Councilor-elect Esterman stated on his July 14 candi- date statement when he filed to run for City Council that he was residing at 153 N. Oak St. and would be “mov- ing shortly to 329 Jefferson Way.” Esterman’s landlord and business partner, Celia Hung, owns both properties. Esterman signed his origi- nal lease on the Oak Street house October 8, 2015, and said he lived there until April 2016. In April, according to Esterman, the roof began to leak so his landlord had him move to a different property temporarily while repairs were made. Prior to the November 8 election, a number of inqui- ries were made to City Hall See ESTERMAN on page 30 Grant approved for low-income apartments By Sue Stafford Correspondent During last week’s Sisters City Council meeting, Tom Kemper, executive director of HousingWorks, announced he had received word that they will be awarded the LIFT funds that were applied for in October in order to build an affordable 48-unit townhouse project in Sisters. That means that there is some relief in sight for the ongoing shortage of afford- able rental housing in Sisters for local service employees and those making $12 an hour or less. The Land Innovation and Fast Track Housing Program came out of the 2015 Oregon legislature when $40 mil- lion of general obligation XI-Q bonds were commit- ted to fund the program. The objective of the program is to build new affordable housing for low-income households, especially for families in rural communities with less than 25,000 residents, and communities of color. Bike shop outfits 43 riders Through the generosity of the Sisters community, Blazin Saddles cycle shop outfitted 43 people with a bike and a helmet during their annual holiday bike donation drive. The drive sought bike donations regardless of size, type or condition. Blazin Saddles got the bikes running safely and into the hands of Sisters residents who could use a bike this holiday season. Working with Sisters RFPD, Sisters School District, and Habitat for Humanity, the drive was aimed at making family cycling available to everyone in town. “We did a lot more adults,” said Blazin Saddles owner/operator Casey Meudt. “It was actually a majority of adult bikes this year, but pretty close to 50/50.” The goal was “just being able to get families out together.” That included mak- ing it possible for a grandma to get out riding with her grandson, Meudt reported. “We were also able to provide a special-needs adult who’s unable to ride a tradi- tional bike and we got some adult training wheels and put them on,” Meudt told The Nugget. “That was pretty special.” Cash donations enabled Blazin Saddles to provide a helmet with each bicycle. Meudt was impressed — and grateful — for the way in which the community came together to support the program. “It’s pretty impressive, this little community we live in,” he said.
