24 Wednesday, December 21, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Outlaws stopped by the Storm By Rongi Yost Correspondent The Outlaws had a very tough time in their 56-32 loss to the Storm at Summit High School on Tuesday, December 13. Summit boasts nine veteran senior players who are quick, ath- letic, and play extremely hard. Coach Rand Runco told The Nugget that the Outlaws knew the Storm was going to be a difficult matchup for them. The Outlaws played com- petitive basketball for about six minutes, and then the wheels fell off. Runco said, “We felt we could defend them in the half-court, and thought if we could handle their ball pressure and aggressive play defensively, we could get the ball inside. Their danger is in turning you over and scor- ing on you in transition, and that’s what really broke the game wide open.” At the end of the first quarter the Outlaws turned the ball over four consecu- tive times against the Storm’s press, which led to lay-ins, and Sisters couldn’t recover. The Storm was on top 12-8 at the close of the period. At the half, the Storm had pushed to a 33-20 advantage. Summit outscored the Outlaws 23-12 in the second half and tallied the win. Ty Horner led the Outlaws’ scoring with 13 points, followed by Keegan Greaney who had six points and 13 boards. Ben Saba con- tributed six points, and Jack Berg added five. Runco shared that the Outlaws were sound defen- sively, and when they did The Nugget Newspaper Crossword By Jacqueline E. Mathews, Tribune News Service get the ball inside, they were successful. The problem was the Outlaws’ turnovers, cou- pled with the Storm’s offen- sive boards, really kept the Outlaws from competing. Sisters had over 20 turnovers and gave up over 20 offen- sive boards. “There is no way we can stay with a team of this cali- ber with those stats,” said Runco. “We have a really tough pre-season schedule and we have a lot to learn from this loss. This is a new team and we are working on chemistry on the court. They get along very well, but many of these players have not played together, and we are working out the kinks against really good teams. Our effort has been good and our vision is on improving, which we are.” — Last Week’s Puzzle Solved — We have a really tough pre-season schedule and we have a lot to learn from this loss. — Rand Runco The Outlaws had three games canceled at the 4A Seaside Tournament due to weather and poor road conditions. Sisters was to come back this week with a game against 5A Lebanon at home on Tuesday, December 20. They are scheduled to have a make-up game with The Dalles on Wednesday, December 21, and then will host their annual Holiday Tournament Wednesday through Friday, December 28-30.
