4 Wednesday, July 6, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon City snapshots Belly dancing and Shakespeare The Food Cart Garden at Eurosports will host some- thing a little out of the ordi- nary for Quilt Show Week. Sisters local Shey Samson has been belly dancing for several years and owns Tribal Grace Belly Dancing Studio. Two years ago she moved to Sisters from San Diego, where she performed at many venues. Since moving here, she’s been so busy teaching that she hasn’t performed. Tribal Fusion is belly dancing, Bollywood, ballet, Bahngra (Indian dance), jazz, modern dance and hip-hop all melded together. Shey explains, “I changed this type of dance into more of storytelling type of dance because it engages more with people and helps me express myself more.” Although you might think a belly dancer is an extrovert, Shey says, “I used to have trouble socializ- ing with people, but dancing in this way helped me break through that.” Shey will incorporate fire- dancing and fire-eating in her show on Friday, July 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. She will dance to prerecorded music and also has a live drummer to accom- pany her. This event is free and dog/family friendly. Shakespeare in the Park has been a popular Sisters event for many years. This year the matinee has moved to the Food Cart Garden. Clinton K. Clark directs this version of Shakespeare’s most popularly performed tragedy, By Sue Stafford Correspondent photo provided Shey Samson includes fire in her dances. “Hamlet,” on Sunday, July 10 at 3 p.m. (An evening perfor- mance is set for July 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Village Green Park.) At their workshop on June 30, Council selected three firms to interview on August 4. The current firms providing legal counsel are temporary until Council makes their per- manent selection. • Darcy Reed, associate planner in the Community Development Department, was recently married and will be leaving her position with the City. She and her hus- band are moving to the Paso Robles, California, area where they have both accepted new positions. A replacement will be hired, which could be a difficult task in this booming development market, when many planners go to work as private consultants. Because of Oregon’s unique land-use laws, the City is hoping to recruit a planner with experi- ence in Oregon. • Joe O’Neill, city finance manager, will be trading Cr ood G - y az offices at City Hall with EDCO Manager Caprielle Lewis. The move will put O’Neill closer to the front of the office and the staff mem- bers with whom he regularly works. Lewis’ move toward the back will provide her with more privacy for confidential meetings with prospective businesses. • Interim City Manager Rick Allen will be out of the office the weeks of July 11 and July 25. In his absence contact City Recorder Kathy Nelson 541-323-5213 or knelson@ ci.sisters.or.us with any ques- tions or concerns. • Packets are available at City Hall for any in-City resi- dent who is interested in run- ning in November for one of three open City Council seats. Perfected petitions are due at City Hall by August 30, 2016. • Quilt Show Week is here, and the town is full of guests from all over the U.S. as well as from many foreign coun- tries. Remember that Cascade Avenue will be closed on Saturday to vehicular traffic, providing a large pedestrian mall for our visitors. The Sisters Artist Marketplace is HAPPENING again this year on Friday and Saturday, July 8, 9 at 320-340 Cascade Ave., in the center of the City of Sisters. Even with the new 100-foot setback ordinance the City of Sisters has adopted to create a business “Dead Zone” along Cascade Avenue, intended to block “Fair Busi- ness Competition” from “Locals & Outsiders,” due to the concern of a very few local brick-and-mortar businesses in town. On the face of the few negative business-owners and unfair local government, Central Oregon Shows is work- ing harder and ever more determined to bring you, the public, an even better OUTDOOR EVENT EXPERIENCE!! On Friday, we kick off at noon with the “Cold War” iconic symbol of entering into the Free World. The “Checkpoint Charlie Bar” will be welcoming you on the border of the “Dead Zone.” There will be a variety of Arts, Crafts, Food and Live Entertainment. Friday it’s the “Derek Michael Marc Double AA Band” and on Saturday the “Anvil Blasters.” There also will be a display from a private collection of Dean and Mary Smith’s “Amazing Quilt Creations” in memory of Sisters Country’s very own artists. This Sisters Outdoor Experience is FREE TO THE PUBLIC. Friday 7/8, Noon-7pm & Saturday 7/9, 9am-5pm For Information: Richard Esterman, 541-420-0279 Email: centraloregonshows@gmail.com
