Wednesday, July 6, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Festival all-event passes sold out The Sisters Folk Festival has once again sold out its all-event passes more than two months in advance of the event. Passes for Sunday per- formances only are still available. The festival runs September 9-11, featuring legendary singer-songwriters Richard Thomson, Ruthie Foster and Shawn Mullins and bands like Session Americana, Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express, The Brothers Comatose, Los Texmaniacs and many others. Scottish fiddle master Alasdair Fraser will perform with Natalie Haas, and the festival welcomes bluegrass and folk veterans Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum with Nina Gerber. About 4,000 people attend the Sisters Folk Festival, which has gained a national reputation for excellence. Performers and audiences alike especially appreci- ate its unique format where “all the town’s a stage” with venues scattered throughout town, many of them in local eateries. Hayden Homes withdraws application By Sue Stafford Correspondent Last week, Hayden Homes notified Patrick Davenport, community development director, that they were with- drawing their current applica- tion to remove the eastern 18 acres from the original master plan for the 43-acre Village at Cold Springs subdivision off McKinney Butte Road. During the Sisters Planning Commission’s public hearing on June 16 regarding the requested modification to separate the parcels, Hayden’s attorney and several Hayden employ- ees reviewed their proposed development of the separated 18 acres, which increased the number of single fam- ily homes and decreased the number of apartments. The division would also leave the already-finished portion of the subdivision with a density ratio well below that required in the original approved mas- ter plan. USFS to decommission area trails By Jim yuskavitch Correspondent Beginning in July, the U.S. Forest Service will begin decommissioning an exten- sive, illegal trail system in the Stevens Canyon area north- east of Sisters. Located within the Metolius Deer Winter Range, the trail system was begun about two decades ago by some off-road motorcycle enthusiasts who took it upon themselves to build a trail through public and private lands. Over the years, this clan- destine trail system has grown to about 20 miles as more off-road-vehicle users created additional trail seg- ments. Since the Forest Service implemented its rule in 2009 limiting off-road vehicles to designated roads and trails, illegal OHV use of the Stevens Canyon trails has declined. However, mountain bikers have since discovered the system and are riding it extensively. All that activity in the Stevens Canyon portion of the Metolius Deer Winter Range — which stretches from the Metolius River east to the Deschutes River and includes National Forest, Bureau of Land Management and pri- vate lands — has Sisters Ranger District wildlife biolo- gist Monty Gregg concerned. “People think that because there is lots of forest then there is room for a trail,” said Gregg. “But it’s mule deer winter range that is significant and critical habitat, and the trail goes through areas that are also important to other species of wildlife.” A mule deer population of about 5,700 animals uses the winter range. They migrate down from higher elevations in November and December, then back up again in April and May, traveling through Stevens Canyon during the early part of the fall migration and later parts of the spring migration. Sara Gregory, wildlife habitat biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, studied the Metolius deer herd from 2005 to 2012, putting radio and GPS collars on about 100 See IllEgAl tRAIlS on page 30 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Central Oregon Council on Aging Senior Lunch Tuesdays, noon, Sisters Community Church. 541-678-5483.
