Wednesday, April 27, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Ryan Cook pitches no-hitter SPRD launches ticket sales for annual luau By Rongi Yost Correspondent Ryan Cook pitched a no- hitter to lead the Outlaws to their 11-1 victory over Sweet Home at home on Friday, April 22. Three days earlier, Sisters lost 4-3 at Cottage Grove. In Friday’s game against Sweet Home, the Outlaws scored 11 runs on eight hits and had three errors in the game. Sweet Home got one run off zero hits, and had three errors. Ry a n F u n k g o t t h e Outlaws on the scoreboard in the first inning with a two- RBI double to left center. The hit scored Alec Gannon and J.W. Bertagna and put the Outlaws on top 2-0. In the second, the Outlaws’ batters were on fire. Ryan Cook hit a two-RBI double, and J.W. Bertagna had a two- RBI single. Will Werts and Alec Gannon both had RBI singles in the inning. “All of those were hit well,” said Coach Steve Hodges. “There were no cheapies in there.” Sisters added two runs in the third off an RBI double from Gannon and an RBI sin- gle from Werts. The final run came in the fifth on an error. After five innings, the game was over due to the 10-run rule. Cook recorded four strike- outs in the contest. “Ryan had command of his fastballs, and mixed in an occasion curve-ball,” said Hodges. “He stayed in the strike zone and made the hitters put the ball in play.” C ook has thrown a PHOTO BY JERRY BALDOCK Ryan Cook pitched a no hitter and drove in two runs. three-hitter and a no-hitter in his last 12 innings of work, which Hodges stated is phe- nomenal for a kid that didn’t even pitch last year. In their game at Cottage Grove earlier in the week, the Outlaws had 10 hits in the game, but were unable to get any back-to-back. They got three runs off 10 hits, and committed one error in the game. J.W. Bertagna went four- for-four in the game, and had two spectacular diving catches in the outfield. Ryan Funk went three-for-four with two RBI in the third. Sisters had a chance in the 13 eighth with the bases loaded with one out, but the follow- ing two batters struck out, and the inning was over. The Outlaws played good defense, but left 11 runners on base. Zach Morgan did a good job on the mound the first six innings. Morgan left the mound with the score tied at 3-3. Bertagna pitched the seventh and eighth innings, and Cook closed out the ninth. Sisters was to face the Huskies at Sweet Home on Tuesday, April 26. On Friday, April 29, the Outlaws will play at home against Elmira. May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii, and Sisters Park & Recreation District Adult/ Senior Programs Coordinator Shannon Mokuahi Rackowski has decided to start the ticket sales for SPRD’s annual luau. “We have had calls and people stopping by at SPRD to ask when the tickets will go on sale, they don’t want to miss it or it be sold out,” she said. The first “Lei Day” was celebrated on May 1, 1928, on Oahu, with fes- tivities centered in Queen Kaipiolani Park, in Waikiki with hula competitions, Hawaiian music, and King K a m e h a m e h a ’s s t a t u e adorned with maile and plu- meria leis. SPRD’s third annual luau is set for Thursday, August 11, at Village Green Park in the heart of Sisters. “Last year we served 475 meals, so this year I will be capping it at 500,” said Mokuahi Rackowski. “I don’t want anyone to be dis- appointed that we were sold out like it has been for the last two years, so please purchase your tickets early.” Luau is a traditional Hawaiian celebration that brings together food, danc- ing, song and celebration of friends.
