Contestants battle in dodgeball By Izaak kanzig Correspondent It’s not your average high school pageant. The contenders for Mr. SHS and Mr. RHS (Redmond High School) faced off in the annual dodgeball competition last week, hosted by RHS. The pageant has become an event that contestants, students, faculty, and com- munity members have come to enjoy for the last 10-plus years. What is really unique about Mr. SHS is that it is Come In… Relax…Enjoy! Tim Westcott Ronnica Westcott Jenny Duey Mary Morgan 541-588-6611 220 W. Cascade Ave. Come in, Relax, Enjoy! much more than a status symbol; all the proceeds and benefits from the various fundraising events organized by the school and students go directly toward non- profit organizations, such as The Center in Bend, and this year’s nonprofit, Sisters Family Access Network (FAN). FAN provides service for children in families in need up to the age of 18. Volunteers and advocates work directly with families to provide food, housing, school supplies, wellness, and health services. FAN’s mission is to remove roadblocks that pre- vent underprivileged youth from earning a valuable education and pave a more defined path for children to have a successful future. The dodgeball event is just the first of many service events that go toward benefit- ing the community and rais- ing funds for FAN. Coming up on February 21 is a spa- ghetti feed hosted at Sisters Community Church. Tickets will be $5 dollars, with chil- dren under five years old free (see related story, page 6). The Sisters High School Alpine Ski Team had their third Giant Slalom race of the season last Saturday at Willamette Pass Ski Resort. The Outlaws girls team moved up the rankings to sixth out of 13 teams com- peting in the Oregon School Ski Association league. Betsy Ausman placed eighth; Cammi Benson placed ninth; Holland Hartman was 34th, and Erryn Ricker 46th. “Betsy skied very aggres- sively today, and Cammi is consistently in the top 10. Two top-10 placings gave us a lot of team points. This was Erynn’s first race on a GS course. She did an excel- lent job of turning early and staying balanced,” said Coach Greg Ausman. The Outlaws boys team ranked seventh in the team scoring. Individual placings were: John Banks 33rd and Lachlan Wood 34th, while Sam Lewis performed a spectacular departure off the course when he crashed and ejected both skis. “Sam really went after it, caught a gate, and then had a yard sale on his second run,” said Ausman. After the race, team mem- bers, coaches, and parents enjoyed free skiing in the powder on the steep slopes of Willamette Pass. “This is a lifetime sport. These kids are learning skills they can use skiing for the rest of their lives,” said Ausman. photo provided Cammi Benson on the slopes in giant Slalom. STOMP OUT THE FREE FLU SHOT!
