The event is a benefit for the Sisters Schools Foundation and will raise funds for classroom and co-curricular programs at Sisters elementary, middle, and high schools. Bonoff was the first performer to ever grace the Starry Nights stage when she appeared in 1997 to kick off the long- running concert series, which has raised more than one mil- lion dollars in net proceeds to date. Bonoff has been described as one of the finest singer- songwriters of her genera- tion. With a career spanning four decades, Bonoff is cel- ebrated for a songwriting catalog that includes such hits as “Someone To Lay Down Beside Me,” “Lose Again,” and “All My Life” for Linda Ronstadt, “Home” for Bonnie Raitt, and “Tell See CONCeRt on page 19 Outdoor science to be featured February 20 Are you smarter than a monkey? COCC will hap- pily test you and let you know. Can you ride a bike? Jon Renner is betting that you can’t do it. Can you fly a plane? ENERGYneering Solutions will let you try to stay in the air on their flight simulator. Once you’ve gotten your wings on the simulator, you can go to the real thing and try your hand at flying a paper airplane from one end of the gym to the other end. All this will happen at the Sisters Science Fair at Sisters High School on Saturday, February 20, from noon to 4 p.m. This year’s theme is out- door science and students and community members will be showing off their best. The outdoor science theme is evident in the mul- tiple displays for astronomy. Leading journeys into the ice By Craig Rullman Correspondent Brent McGregor came to Oregon for the junipers, he says, but stayed for the adventures. At 63, he has climbed every volcanic peak in the Cascades, topped all three Sisters in under 12 hours, explored into the deep reaches of Central Oregon’s extensive network of lava tubes and, most recently, along with his partners at Glacier Cave Adventures, has become a world-famous explorer and photographer. As a young man growing up in San Diego, Brent felt drawn to the wilds. In his 20s, he spent a year living in a canvas teepee in the raw wilderness of Alaska, where he made his own clothes, hunted his own food, and ran a sled team with 18 dogs. “I had a dream when I was 8 or 10 years old, to go the wildest wilderness I could find,” he recalled. “I just wanted to go into a really wild place and to be there.” That dream eventu- ally brought him to Central Oregon, where he has built furniture out of juniper, as Rocky Mountain Furniture Products, for 30 years. He was attracted to juniper, McGregor says, because the round forms of the natural product were more interest- ing to him than traditionally milled productions. Brent’s appreciation for the character revealed in juniper trees is revealed in his photography of the glacial cave systems he explores. Exploding with light and form, the pictures remind one of the best photographs of exploding nebulas in space, and his work has recently been featured at Maptia. com’s “46 Places To Fill You With Wonder For 2016,” an anthology of “the most tal- ented photographers on the planet.” McGregor’s team, Glacier Cave Explorers, has com- pleted three expeditions to the Sandy Glacier on Mt. Hood since 2014, mapping, photographing, and record- ing the constantly changing conditions inside 7,000 feet See mCgRegOR on page 28 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Sisters Area Photography Club 2nd Wednesday, 4 p.m., Sisters Library community room. 541-549-6157.
