Wednesday, January 20, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Sisters woman receives Kiwanis scholarship The Sisters Kiwanis Club awards financial aid to adults who are seeking a career change. This pro- gram, known as the Kiwanis Career Opportunity Fund (COF) assists local adults (25 or older) who are financially unable to return to school or retrain for a career change. Aleshia Detweiler, a Sisters resident, was recently awarded a COF scholar- ship that will allow her to enroll in the Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) program at Central Oregon Community College. The NTP program is a distance learning holistic nutrition course where students learn tools for assessing the body’s nutritional deficiencies and how to address those weak- nesses through diet, supple- ments, and lifestyle changes. Upon successful completion of the NTP course, students graduate with a certification from the Nutritional Therapy Association. Detweiler said that Kiwanis financial support makes it possible for her to enroll in the NTP program that begins in February. Yet, at almost 92, his life is filled with wonder, having found new opportunity beyond every closed door. His work will bring him to Sisters as a guest at the Sisters Science Club presentation by Scott Fisher, professor of astronomy at the University of Oregon on January 26. (See announcements, page 12.) Robbins, a civil and geo- technical engineer, con- sulted on the construction of six Portland-area hospitals, Portland’s Veterans Hospital, the OHSU and Veterans Hospital Sky Bridge, the “Pill Hill” parking tower, and water and sewer district developments throughout the Northwest. Local firefighters take on cancer On March 6, firefight- ers from throughout the Northwest, and indeed the world, will travel to Seattle to participate in the 25th annual Scott Firefighter Stairclimb. The Scott Firefighter Stairclimb offers firefight- ers the chance to display their physical conditioning by climbing the second- tallest building west of the Mississippi River — the Columbia Tower. At 69 sto- ries, this is a physical chal- lenge that can be quite for- midable. Each firefighter is timed and monitored through- out the climb. The climb is performed in full firefighter gear, including SCBA, or self-contained breathing apparatus, the air tank that firefighters wear to have breathable air when enter- ing hazardous environments, such as burning buildings. Typical equipment such as boots, fire-resistant cloth- ing, helmet, and SCBA can weigh 50 pounds or more. Each firefighter is checked prior to the climb to ensure that his equipment meets the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). This is the organi- zation that sets national stan- dards for firefighting equip- ment and response. If his equipment has been modified and no longer meets the stan- dard, that firefighter is not allowed to climb the building. Attended by both paid and volunteer firefighters from departments large and small alike, the event is a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, to sup- port their research into curing blood cancers. In 2015, the event featured 1,900 fire- fighters from over 330 differ- ent departments and brought in a record $2.2 million for blood-cancer research and patient services. Cloverdale Fire District’s Lieutenant Clinton Weaver said that “from last years’ experience, performing this climb at 56 years old was not easy. It was quite a feeling of accomplishment to know that I could finish this climb. It was even more gratifying to know that I could finish in under 30 minutes, and come out somewhere in the middle See StAIrcLIMB on page 10 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Sisters Area Photography Club 2nd Wednesday, 4 p.m., Sisters Library community room. 541-549-6157.
