Wednesday,December23,2015The Nugget Newspaper,Sisters,Oregon9 Wrestlers take eighth at Culver Invite By Rongi Yost Correspondent Sisterswrestlersattended theannualCulverInvitational heldonFridayandSaturday, December 11-12, and came away with an eighth-place finish.Culvertookfirstplace withateamscoreof245.5in thetwo-day,18-teamtourney, Harrisburgwasrunner-upat 191.5, and Lowell finished thirdwith160. The Outlaws were only able to take 16 of their 27 wrestlers due to sickness andinjuries,butCoachJohn Downs told The Nugget he stillhopedtheOutlawswould placeinthetop10andfinish aheadofRidgeview. Sisters did just that with a98-pointfinish,twopoints aheadofRidgeviewwhofin- ished ninth with 96 points. Thetop-10finishwasahuge accomplishmentforthemat- men, as they realized that each year they have gotten betterandbetter.In2013the Outlaws placed 18th at this same tourney, and in 2014 theyplaced12th. “This was accomplished by all wrestlers wrestling to the best of their ability, and many of them moving up through their brackets, scoringpointsfortheteam,” saidDowns. FourOutlawsstoodoutat thetournament;seniorMitch Gibney(220pounds);senior ClaytonDarst(170pounds); freshman Parker Ford (106 pounds),andsophomoreCole Pade(126pounds). Gibney, who was seeded third,pinnedhiswaythrough thefinalsforasecond-place finish.Mitchpinnedhisfirst opponent, Hunter Sims of Corbett in 22 seconds, and thenpinnedBillCritesfrom Crook County in 30 sec- onds.Inthequarterfinals,he recordedhisthirdpinagainst Chase Cook from Nestucca in 1:36. Sean Hancock of Ridgeviewwaspinnedin1:38 inthesemifinals. Thefinalswereadifferent story.GibneyfacedWilliam BeardfromGlide,thethree- time 5A state champion. Mitch went all three rounds withBeard,butBeardwonin a5-3decision. “Idon’tthinkBeardreal- ized how strong and fast of a wrestler Mitch was until thefinalwhistleblew,”said Downs.“Iwasveryproudof Mitch.Heprovedtotheother teams that he is an Outlaw tobereckonedwithwhenhe steps on the mat.
