Wednesday, April 22, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Boys tennis defeats Blanchet By rongi Yost Correspondent The boys tennis team won by the slimmest of margins against Blanchet at Black Butte Ranch on Wednesday, April 15. Sisters tied 4-4 in matches played, but won 10-8 in sets. Colin Reinert pulled out the only single win at the No. 1 spot. Reinert domi- nated play, and his big serves were key in his 6-2, 6-4 victory over Kimmitoshi Nakano. Sisters won three of the four doubles matches played. Ben Johnson and Gabe Willitts (No. 2 doubles) beat Spencer Schibig and Dakota Juring 6-2, 6-3. “These guys continue to improve with every match,” said Coach Bim Gander. “They’re both tall, 6 feet 2 inches and 6 feet 3 inches, and it’s difficult for opponents to pass or lob against when they’re entrenched at the net, because they’re so tall.” Pierce Wehrle and Josh Kizziar (No. 3 doubles) earned an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win over Nathan Mcintyre and Sean Thompson. “Pierce and Josh are good, steady players,” stated Gander. “They’re tenacious and have a willingness to hit one more ball into the court.” At the No. 4 spot, Andrew Stengel and Gus Gyorgyfalvy teamed up for the first time, and earned a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over Jing Jing Li and William Yuen. Gander said, “This was a good match to build on as we move into matches against district opponents.” Sisters’ overall record is 2-2-1. Boys lacrosse splits games By rongi Yost Correspondent The boys lacrosse team started their week with a very tough game against fifth- ranked Bend on Wednesday, April 15, and fell short in a final score of 19-9. Three days later, the Outlaws bounced back with a 10-7 victory at home against Churchill. O n We d n e s d a y, t h e Outlaws scored their first goal in the first two minutes of the contest. They played hard, and never quit until the final whistle blew. Joe Jones led the Outlaws with four goals, Mark Fish recorded two, and Chance Halley, Gary Jacques and Casey Lane each scored one. “It was a big deal for Gary and Casey to score a goal, because they are both long- stick defense-men,” said Coach Andrew Gorayeb. Gorayeb noted goalie Angelo Frack: “Kudos to Angelo for staying invested in the game, despite having over 30 shots taken against him. “As always, we showed heart and poise. Our boys play tough and in the words of Bend Coach Joe Kersin, ‘The score did not reflect the competitiveness of the game.’ We like to play Bend; They’re really good, and it raises up our game.” Sisters scored nine goals against the top-ranked Lava Bears, and only two other teams have been able to do that this year. Churchill traveled over from Eugene on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. game at Reed Stadium. photo by Jerry baldock Devin slaughter passes the ball versus churchill. Sisters started out slow. Churchill kept pace with the Outlaws, and for the most part, teams went goal-for- goal for the first three quarters Sisters woke up in the fourth quarter, picked up the pace and level of play, con- trolled the ball, and pulled away for a 10-7 finish. Fish had an amazing game and led the team with five goals. Jones recorded two goals, and Halley, Gladden, and Christian Hunt each added one. “Christian had an amazing game,” said Gorayeb. “He has had a bit of a slow start to his season this year, but really showed up and played well.” Gorayeb cited Fish for his huge contribution, and also Jones, Tyler Head, and Gladden for “doing the dodge,” a move they have been perfecting this season. The Outlaws will play at home against Roseburg on Saturday, April 25. YOU ODAY FOR T L L A C R IN O R E C N A R U S FREE I N SON!
