Ob-MU, DAILY QAmAL WT TWENTY THOUSAND Great Preparations uamenng the and Polk Within the next two months, thero will be within a radius of twolvo or fif. teen miles of Willamette valley coun try, tributary to Salem, at least 20,000 people living ln tents and engaged in picking hops. In reality it will bo a city of busy people; and preparations for this work is already well under way. Notwithstanding the prevailing low prices of hops and tho losses that were sustained by somo of tho growers last year, tho amount of capital investwl in the industry is so enormous that cv- ory. effort will bo used to facilitate the harvesting of tho crop. Thero was a scarcity of pickcr3 last year throughout the entire season. Thi was so cxtonsivo that some of the hops were Injured beforo they wero gath ered. Tho growers will uso every means in their power to prevent this from recurriug. Many of tho growers aro already cneairinir holn ami wWn tho season begins will havo all tho pick ers engaged and camping in tents on tho grounds. Good prices will prevail nnd many things will bo dono to make tho hop pickers havo not onh- all the comforts, but most of tho so-called lux uries of life. The scarcity of help last year was caused partly because tho "season opened gloomily, as far as tho weather was concerned, and becauso tho Lewis and Clark fair gavo employment to hundreds of boys and girls In Portland, who otherwise could havo been depend cd upon to gather at tho hop fields. Hundreds of waitresses in tho tempo rary restaurants and at such resorts as tho Oaks usually aro glad to hio them selves to tho valloy on tho first of Sep tember and try tho beauties of tho slm plo lifo for a couple of month, while regaling themselves in tho hop yards! at $3 per day. Tho Clomcnt Horst yards have al ready engaged 400 pickers and aro now receiving fivo or six letters a day from peoplo who desiro to assist in saving this year's crop. Tho famous yards of Krebs Brothers, also near Independence, aro Hkowlse engaging help. Most of tho applica tions for work aro coming from Polk, Marion, Linn nnd Lnno counties and tho counties along tho coast. A big contingent is expected from Portland and Oregon City will send its quota as usual. Many pickers, too, will como from other states and from oastorn Oregon, more for tho outing and tho novelty than for tho compensation. Hundreds of pooplo como for tho ploasuro and for their health. Tho unsophisticated and tho unltl- ated will fail to understand whero the pleasuro comes in. They will only have to remember that tho-o will bo as ninny people in camp at onco as will populate a city and that tho most favorablo con ditions for ploasuro prevail. Neither must tho stranger imagine- for n mo mont that the hop pickers aro composed of the riff raff or tho flotsam and jot sani of tho big towns. Such is not tho case, iiie wtrKrs uro mu csu.ui v-. nlo of all olosses. Tho work is pleas ant, the surrounding attractivo and the wages received are highor than moil of theso peoplo could earn at anything el so At tho Krebs yard, is ono of tho larg est and what is probably tho finest ,1 hall In tho stato. Tho manago- ' mont at its own expouso maintains an orchestra and tho hop pickers glvo a ball overy night, Those functions add somewhat to tho gaiety of nations and holp somo. Tho Clement Horst yards also hae a largo danco hall and will keep a ban! this season. Almost all tho largo yards have ben improving them and cleaning them up, until tho work this year will bo made very oasy. Last year somo of the yards made an attempt to adopt the system of paying by weight. Tho Horst yards stuck to tho bot plan and will contJnuo that fcU rear. It is said that many other yards will return to tto plan of paying by the box. Tho prico tuat win provau ims jcu will bo 50 cents a box. The boxes hold nlno bushels and n averago girl can pick six boxes a day and an extra good hand will pickets or twelve boxes. Whllo it will bo two months before the picking begins, there is much work being done now in tho hop yards and much work remains to bo dono after tho picking is completed. Thero yet remains ono cultivation and ono train ing before picking. rT 0REaw MONDAY, JUNE 25, 1006. HOP PICKERS COMING Are Being Made for Crop in Marion Counties sv Hops around Salem, both in Marion and Polk counties, aro looking well and unless something unforeseen occurs tho output will bo large. Waltor Lyon of Independence, who know all about hops from Alpha to Omcara. was In a. lorn yesterday and gavo It out that tho hops around Independence aro thriving like tho proverbial green bay treo. On the Marion county sldo across tho Willamctto from Indonendonen U n area of 700 acros of hops. This in cludes tho yards of George Rose, Henry Ottenheimer, Percival, Damon, Cooper Graves, Fennel, Mix, Smith and othors. It Is estimated that 10,000 pickers will be lu and very near Independence this year. All tho way betweon this city and Independence is almost a solid hop field. The two largest hop yards In the United Stntes nro near Independence tho Krebs yard, four miles south, and tho Clement Horst yards, four miles north. That Tlrod Fooling.
