:' If I. DAILY OAPlffAE JOURNAL, SALEM, ORBQON, MONDAY, JUNE 25, 1000. ' Military "Want" Advertising. Washington, June 23. The army and savy officers who havo to do with re cruiting havo always expressed much curiosity to knoj to what means" of publicity? may bo'ascrlbod tho procure ment of recruits. It has' always been question whether newspaper adver tising paid bettor than tho circus post ers which havo been "more or lens crlti' eisod, especially in congress, as over stating opportunities and advantages of enlistment, General F. C. Ainsworth, tho military secretary of tho army, has sent out a circular to recruiting officers calling for reports, which will show how ench ap plicant happened to present himself for cnllntinent. Lioutcnant E. E. Harding, of tho Twenty-sixth infantry, who is in charge of itho recruiting offices in Third avdnno, and Major E. P An drows, of tho Third! cavalry, who has charge of tho recruiting stations in Sixth and Eighth avenues, Now York Oity, will horeaf ter ascertain from each recruit whether ho learned of the op portunities of enlistment through a nowspaper advertisement tho recruit ing circular, tho -decorated poster, the flag of tho recruiting .station, or whether ho just happened io drop in. Thoro is a difference of opinion as to tho merits of tho various methods of publicity. Most of the authorities en tortain tho idea, howovor, that the nowspaper advertisement yields tho best results, on tho ground that accept able men who aro out of work read the "want" ads of tho papers and como across tho call for recruits, although, of course, it is admitted that a cartain amount of "dead wall" advertising must keep tho need for enlisted men boforo tho public. It is probablo that tho information acquired as a result of Ganoral Alnsworthi's circular will gov ern tho war dopnrtment horeaftcr in Its methods for advertising for re oduits, and undoubtedly this policy of tho war department will havo an lnflu onco upon tho navnl methods. of Gorman-Americans, mombors of tho various societies and organizations bo longing to tho Gorman-American alli ance, are assembled horo to ,tako part in tho great Btato convention of tho alliance, which opened' hero today for a three days' session. THB FIRST BDITION IS LIMITED, SO 8BND IN YOUR ORDBRBABLY, Salem, Ore., Juno 23, 1900. -Editor Jeurnal: In your issue of Saturday "A Read er" cnilis ior tno iestrucuou oi tno "unhcalthful and unsightly trees" along the Stnio street border of tho University campus, and "hopes that college peoplo .will bo sufficiently up to dtito to remove tho trees," etc, It is not always wiso for any of us to as sumo thoA only those who agree with us are "up to date," and if this propo sition is "up to date," I think there is an almost universal sentiment im this community that wo should cling to tho ideas of tho forefathers. Salem's trees have always been her rpido and among her chief beauties, and thero is hardly a feature of tho town that has attract ed more frequent and more favorable comment from strangers than; tho viow fnorrt tho northeast corner of the cam pus of that double row of trees. Your correspondent has uttered tho first disr cordant note. I had occasion this morn ing to walk the full length of Stato street, and I felt just as healthy and much more comfortable1 as I walked un der tho shadow of those) trees than 1 did as I walked' in tho hot sun from Twelfth to Twenty-first street. An oc casional tree with decaying branches should bo taken out, but for overy one takdri out at least .two should bo put in. They aro not "unsightly," and all tho "unhcalthful" trees in the whole row wouldn't furnish Messrs. Clough and Rigdon enough pationago to buy a breakfast in the next fifty years. The destruction) of so many ofour beautiful shodo trees during tho past fow years has detracted from the beau ty of our town, and "has been almost universally regreted. While the lay ing of cement walks hasi mado tho re moval of many of them' necessary, many could and should havo been saved. The maplq, too, is preferable to tho smaller trees, becauso when trimmed' as it should bo to tho height of at least fifteen; or twenty feet, it gives an abundance of spaco under its limbs for ( the free circulation of air and sunlight. It is a singular mania that would prompt tho cutting down of a beautiful treo which if) takes at least a genera tion -tofgrow, and it is an unfortunato mental condition that keeps ttome peo ple, awako every night in the year wor rying becauso the maple leaves aro to littoa 'tlho sidewalks for two or three weeks in tho fall. Seivero cases of this kind mighlt bo cured by spending a hot summer in tho shadow of a clump of sago brush) in Nevada, or under tho shade of a. juniper treo in some of the almost treeleBS regions of eastern Ore gon. Mildei cases would respond to troatmont compelling them for tho next three months to take tiho sunny side of Stato street, and imposing a heavy pen alty upon any ono of them found walk ing through, that avonuo of "unsigVQy and unhealtliful" shade trees fronting the University campus. As a membor of the board of trustees of Willamette university and at tho risk of being considered) ' ' out of dato,' ' I wish to bo recorded as a friend of that avenuo of ehndo trees, nnd I shall vigorously protest against their re moval.
