SALEM OREGON I 'Phone 2824 CLAIMS PARKER WILL BE DEFEATED (Continued from first page.) 1st after the first ballot, thus bringing his total strength up to 748. When j Illinois, with 54 votes is added, as it Is claimed they will be by the Parker men, the Parker vote totals 802, with the doubtful or Hearst states on the second ballot. The antls, of course, scout the claim. There Is the best authority for the statement this afternoon that the Tammany leaders will give up their fight tonight to prevent the nomina tion of Parker. Every effort they have made so far to weld the nucleus against Parker's candidacy ha3 come to nothing, and they fel It is purpose less to carry the fight further. A Tammany leader this afternoon said: "Wo have told the delegates that Clev eland was the best man to nominate, but they teem to prefer Parker. We have done all we could, but I can see no hope for our compalgn." Tammany leaders have heard indirectly this af ternoon that Bryan had sent word to Charley Murphy that he was willing to support the canildacy of Mayor Mc- Ulellan, and would go even so far as j to place him in nomination. Murphy's first lieutenant, Delaney, who was manager of McClellan's mayorality campaign, eaid that no such Intimation had been received, while Murphy re fused to talk.
