John Gantenbein, Austin Fish burn and Prank Haas wore in a boat, about 300 yards from the bridgo, when they heard a heavy splash la tho water. They could soo a white speck on tho water, and were soon apprised of the fact that a mam was In the riv er. The shouts of a number of oth era attracted their attention, and they realized that a tragedy was being en acted. Rowing tho boat swiftly down the currenlt they came within 30 feet of the man, but when he feared that ho was about to be rescued, ho raised his arms and disappeared forever from eight. Tho only trace that tho rash man loft was a worn and tattored straw hat, which floated on tho water, and was picked up by tho men in tho boat. It Is a plain hat, Fedora shape, with the trade mark "Glrard" on the Inside. The size Is 6, and the lot number 162. From tho description furnished by the men in tho boat and others who were on Ithe shore and tho bridgo ap proach, the man wab about 60 years old and bald headed. Ho looked over his shoulder several times when tho row boat wa3 approaching him, and continued to swim down tho channel, until tho men wero almost within reach of him, when' he deliberately re fused to use his arms, and went down. He seemed to have some difficulty In sinking, but held his head under (tho water. Ho was In his shirt sleeves and wore a light-colored1 vest. Tho police have made every effort to find a trace of tho man in this city, but havo been unable to learn of anyono who Is missing. 0 PROPOSALS FOR WOOD, U. S.
