Tho meaning of tho word "bunk um," or nt least tho impression con veyod by tho word, has slowly al tored in this country nt least within tho last 40 years. It originally meant according to nil American diction nrk-9, talking for talking's sake oi talking to one audience for tho bene fit of another. Tho congressional member for a district of North Car ohna, named Buncombe, insisted delivering ti speech to an hnj i on houso of representatives, and when taxed with his conduct lefendil himself by declaring that ho v. compelled to uiako a speech wlifoh his constituents could read, and that. in fact, he was "talking to mm combo." This is certainly tho bonse in which Judge Hnliburton. tho auth or of "Sam Slick," used tho expres sion, and our recollection is that In 1840-EO it was so employed within quotation marks in criticising parlia mentary Bpeechos. The Americans, who catch any much needed phraso of tho kiu'J with extraordinary quickness, speeu' ily degraded "buncombe" into "bui kum."and tho vulgar spelling wa, slowly adopted in England, but witl significant change of meaning. The word being American, and all Ameri can oratory uttered for effect having one peculiar note in it, "bunkum1 camo to signify speech uttered sole ly to attract through its tone of pa triotic exaggeration. Tho man who talks bunkum is not talking vague nonsense or stuff intended to occupy time, but is uttering "high falutin" flattery either of tho people or of the country or of the future which is bo fore either. London Koview. A Contented Scrubwoman. "I don't havo very hard times now, do I?" appealed the woman who was down on her knees wiping up an office floor. "You see I am janitor ip threo buildings that I have to clean up in the, morning, but it only takes a little while, and then I havo time to go and clean soinewhero else. 1 havo to work in the morning and work in tho evening till ft o'clock sometimes, but I don't have" such a hard timo of it. "Oh, no I It ain't as hard as washing. You have to do so much more work washing to got the samo money. You havo to wash so "many pieces, I mean. "At one office I get $8, at another JG and at another $4, and that's pretty good for mo, I think. I only have to dust and clean a little every morning, and then I can go some vvhero else tho rest of the day. J Jon't think I havo to work so hard t trot alone very well.' ' Surely contentment with our lot4s a great tning, anu contentment is greater than gold. Imagine spending a good part of tho week on one's knees cleaning floora and thinking it isn't hard work. Most of uswpuld decido otherwise. Buffalo News'. A Friendly Wasp. A gentleman becoming annoyed by tho persistent buzzing of a wasj about his head knocked it down w.itli his newspaper It fell through an open window upon tho Bill apparent ly dead. Only apparently, for a few jseconda later to tho observer's aston isnment a largo wasp now on to tm window Bill and after buzzing arount tho injured ono a Becond or two bo gan to lick it all over. After thh treatment (which may have been a kind of massage) tho sick wasp seemed to revive, and his friend1 then dragged him gently to tho edge, grasped him around tho body and flow away with him. Evidently the strangor finding .a wounded comrade gave somo aid partly to restore him preliminary to removal to a place oi safety for further treatment and then carried him there. This brave littlo wasp acted liko a good Samari tan, who found a man "half dead," "bound up his wounds, pouring on them oil and wine" and 'brought him to an inn and took caro of 'him.'" Sunshine. Jenny Juue's Quick Wit. An instance of Jenny June's ready wit is told by an nmused bystander, who overheard this conversation; A young woman was introduced to Mrs. Croly as "Bister of So-and-so, the artist" Instantly tho exclamation follewed: "I flhould havo known tbr relationship, my dear, by the resem bianco. Why, it is positively etar tling, I never Baw two faces more exactly aliko in contour and" 'But, Mrs. Croly, interrupteu mo iri m a meek, small voice, "I am only his eister-in-law." "WUicu maKeainui the more remarkable," continued the other without tho least embarrasa nient or hesitation. New1 York Times. . , A Cure For lotTOwlugNall. It is easier to prevent than to cure ingrowing nails-cut them straight across instead of oval. When, how over, a nail starts to grow in, soak the feet in water aa hot as can bo en dured, loosen the cuticle, cut the nail or tho sides and apply a little porchlorato of iron with camels hairbrush. This hardens tho flesh and renders it impenetrable to tho t,w n New York World. I'aW for an III Adl BtrlUe. "No matter what it may be, if an articlo brings a fair prico I deal in It," said a commission merchant. "My last venture consists of dried flies, just common flies which come trom juoxico. jreopio uuy uiom lor , their singing birds. I sell them re tail to tho dealers. Flies aroplenti ful in tho tropical valleys, and the timo of tho Mexican Indian is not particularly valuable. When ho can I'o longer Blicp in Iih hut on account of tho swarm of flict attracted by tho flth which accumulates about his front door, ho sometimes is stung into a desiro for revenge on his ene mies. "Revenco is sweet, and Bweotor if therois'any money in it He goes to tho woods and collects a number o' green twigs of a certain tree. Thesi he lays in n pilo on tno uoor or ui hut, with Eome dry twigs under them. Then from another tree ho gets a gum which ho boils into a thin sirup and spreads on tho walls of his hut. The flies aro attracted by its fragrant aud'farreaching odor. They gather to feed on it. Whon tho hut is black with them, tho Indian seta fire to tho twigs on tho floor nnd closes tho apertures from the outside. Tho twigs emit an aromatic smoko which kills iho flies and they fall to tho boor in thousands. Then tho native's wife dries them whilo ho goes to sleep again.' Wavorly Magazine. A Ferocious Little Snake. To my surprise tho littlo black snake with yellow polka dotted skin of India is a ferocious flghtor. Tho sidewinder, which is ugly enough to strike terror into tho hearts of tie bravest, is always anxious to avoid a conflict, oven when disturbed. On tho contrary, this littlo black and yellow snako is pugnacious and ut terly devoid of fear. Ho is general ly to bo found by the irrigation ditches, and whon convenient will got under a sack and thoro pass tho night, only leaving his shelter when tho sun is warm enough to tempt him out. Tho other morning I pick-, ed up ono in a sack, unknowingly 1 must confess, nnd whon I laid the bag down out darted his snakeship with fiery eyes and mado an impotu ous onslaught. I kopt out of his 'reach and threw sand and small stones at him which he snapped at liko an enraged dog, still steadily pursuing mo. I kept him at a distance, and I bolievo h& would havo been chasing mo still had T not finished his career by halving him with a shovel. The lndinn woman. I havo been told, mado a pet of this evil tempered snake, showing a strango fancy, 1 think, after my experience. Tno In dian working for me explained that he wa3 perfectly harmless and de clared "him very good." Exchange. The Doff Knew What Wn Wanteil. John W. Hayes, tho old police court officer, had a dog that had been in his family for along timo, but it had been decided for good reasons that if must go tho way of all flesh. The family talked it over, and tho decision was finally an ived at that tho dog wagon was to call tho next day and take tho animal to tho pound. ' We called with tho wagon tho next day. but tho dog could not bo found. Wt called again tho next day and wore told that wo had scarcely left the day before when tho dog put in an ap pearance. But ho could not bo found at our second visit. Wo.callod the third day, and although tho dog had reappeared Boon af tor we had left on the previous day ho was not to be found at our third visit. Then a search wbb instituted, and the dog was found under tho bod. Ho had crawled clear to tho farthest corner. Ho acted juBt liko a human being that was awaro his life was be ing Bought, and no argument 'can convince me that tho dog did not un derstand tho conversation of tho fam ily that had condemned him to death and know just wliat tho dog. wagon meant to him.
